Steering clutch
Sometimes when I pull back on the left steering lever, it wants to slow down the crawler, instead of locking up that side to turn. Especially noticeable when going up a hill. Something must be too tight, but what?

40c final drive assembly
I took off the final drive on my 40c. The axle shaft was worn where the outter bearing rode,. I welded it up and had a friend turn it down on his lathe. I will be using new cups and bearings on assembly. The housing was cracked when I bought it, and someone had welded it up. I've noticed that the ne...

40C final drive housing
On my 1955 40c, I have two different final drives, the left side is a M3687 and the right side is a M2361T. Which is the original one and what is the other off of? Also, are all of the gears/parts interchangeable?

Removed the track, and there is play with the right side final drive axle bearings or the axle itself. The final drive housing on that side of the crawler has been welded before. Haven't checked the left side yet for play in that axel. Sounds like a nice winter project. I'll put everything together ...

40C cross member assembly
I adjusted my safety blocks so that there was about 3/16ths of an inch clearance to the sprocket. After pushing a lot of dirt and pulling out a stump, the left hand safety block is now almost touching the sprocket and the right side is touching. What is causing this? Are the rubber mounts for the br...

Pipe Plugs
I drained the old transmission fluid out of the transmission housing and also the two final drives, and replaced with new 80-90 gear oil. While I was under there, I noticed two other plugs on the very bottom, towards the rear of the transmission housing. I took both of them out and am wondering what...

Bought a new oil pressure gauge from Carquest this morning and installed it. This gauge goes up to 50 psi. The John Deere gauge doesn't show numbers, just indicates high and low, and it had a psi rating of 25. Started the 40C up and the oil pressure measured 35 psi. That is good. I can see now why t...

PSI is 25 for this gauge. I think that if the pressure isn't lessened, it will blow this gauge out. That's probably what happened to the one that was in it when I bought it. I also replaced the temp gauge because that was stuck and didn't work. Oil pressure and temperature are important things to kn...
