Cheap? Nah. It shows a good grasp of logic and abilities. Like most of us with a good selection of tools, we'd rather spend 10hrs to make something than pay someone $10 for the part. :D

anybody ever try to cross reference a starter? have a couple that would bolt up, one out of a 50`s jeep, the other out of a 55 2 ton truck, but both turn in the wrong direction.[/quote]

To reverse a starter, all you have to do is reverse the field coils.

Also check your fuel tank for lots of crud or rust. Moving around can stir it up and clog the fuel screen. After it stops (runs out of gas), the crud settles and fuel flows until the next clog.

Not a loader but a dozer. This is the one with the boom, Lavoy. The 1" square is a good idea.

Has anyone made their own grousers?

I will need to add grousers to do some "dirty" work later this year. The 420C currently has street pads and breaks traction on heavy pushes. I was thinking of using angle iron and just bolting them on. (I want to be able to remove them for driveway duties.) Anyone ever try this with say 3/16 x 2" an...

Try to wick or suck it out and see if it returns. I knew a old-timer that used to pour about a cup of oil in his radiator. He said it was to keep the water pump lubed and keep the block from rusting. He didn't use antifreeze. (Deep South Texas) I don't see how it would work but he did it. Oil in the...

Oh boy, do I feel dumb! Apperently I've been using 2nd all this time. :o

So the pattern looks like this?:

2...1...3
.....N....
R...5...4

I'm going to have to write that on the tower. It doesn't look like any pattern I've ever used. :?

5-speed shift pattern?

Ok, I know it sounds dumb but what is the shift pattern on the 420c 5-speed. I've been using 1st with the reverser but now that I have all the loose bolts tightened and the engine purring, the thing wants to run! I've played with the shifter but all the gears seem to be pretty high when starting out...

Just an update on this condition. I was going to post sooner but got tied up working on other stuf and it slipped my mind. I adjusted the valves. That helped a little but after running it under working load conditions for a short time, it smothed out. I suspect there may have been some carbon under ...

Save your money on repro manuals. The one I got was like a Haynes/Chilton--Abreviated and tried to cover every model made in 1/5 the pages of a real manual. They advertise them as model specific but they aren't and don't have all the sections.

It's worth the extra to get the "real manual".

Thanks for the dash layout info. Wasn't the keyswitch an option? If it was, did JD just put a plug in the hole? Also, does anyone know where to get a dash light? Original or Repro?

I just made a new top right for mine today. I took a pice of 2" round stock and cut a relief (3/8") to a diameter of 1 1/2. I then bored it to 3/4" for the bolt. This fits through the frame and into the trans housing dowel relief. Drawing down the bolt tightens the frame against the housing. I still...
