Re: 430C 3 Point+blade

good question tobaccofarmer. I have a 420C with #61 blade and single valve, I have acquired a 3 point (original crawler style) which I plan to add and will need a dual valve as well. Suggestions from the forum are certainly welcome

Re: Idler spring length

I am using a similar approach. The biggest challenge was removing the springs. Bolts were rusted beyond a capability to loosen. Ultimately made a compression jig with threaded rods to further compress the springs and cut off the bolt heads. Still a work in progress but on a path. Plan to use multipl...

Re: Idler spring length

Pete- I am in the process of a similar rebuild. figure 165-15-2 in the 420 service manual shows a compressed spring length of 14- 13/16 inches.

Re: 1956 420c paint- seat and 3 point

When I said 3 point, to be clear, I am focused on the rock shaft assembly to which the seat mounts

thanks

1956 420c paint- seat and 3 point

I know the 56 does not have the yellow stripe on the sheet metal and the crawler frame, drive tumbler and takeup are yellow. What about the Deluxe Seat and 3 point? Green or yellow?

Re: Alternator or Generator

I agree. 6 volt system works good with heavy cables and a good battery. Same was true of my 1950 Studebaker pickup with 6 volt system. Only time it didn't start was when I pushed the clutch pedal to the floor to engage the starter button and it kept cranking until I realized the key was still in my ...

Re: Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability

I found out the hard way that the later model 440's use a different oil pan cover on the final drive as well. 40/420/430 and early 440's use a common cover. The later 440's with the different final drive housing is slightly larger and bolt holes do not line up

Re: Track tension bolts

Has anyone used a threaded 1" rod to replace the spring tension bolts? I can get 3 foot threaded rod with a yield strength of 105,000 psi (slightly better than grade 5)

Lavoy- I will give you a call regarding the seals and update on repinning the tracks

Re: Track tension bolts

Thanks Lavoy I assumed the correct bolts are no longer available. Unfortunately, some threads have been completely worn off on one side for over an inch in length and bent bolts make turning the nuts extremely difficult even where threads exist. Fortunately I have 6 spring assemblies from which to m...

Track tension bolts

I am rebuilding my track system. The tension bolts (1"x25') have some bad threads. Any suggestions? should I buy new bolts and remount the springs? Fastenal has some grade 8 long bolts or are the other sources?

I believe the first year (1956) 420 did not have the yellow stripe. It as added in 1957.

Re: 420C Carburetor

probably will eventually get a 420 carb (lots of other items to repair first).. TSX245 used on 40C as well as M so it is closer to my early 420 which seems to be a modified 40C :D
