Chuck-
I spent some time a few years ago in Wasilla and then a little time in Kennicot (sp?). Looks like Wasilla isnt' that far from you. It sure was pretty country up there and I can't wait to get back up there.
Of all the states I've seen.. Alaska and Montana are my favorites.

I'm pretty sure I killed this battery since the tractor sat for a little over a year. I had a final drive off and was working on a bunch of problems with it but in the mix I had an internship in another state for 6 months, graduation from NC State University, change jobs... etc. Life happened. It's ...

You've had all good advise so far but I was recently experiencing similar issues with a 420. I had 2/0 welding cable made into battery cables last time I went round and round with this crawler. Battery charged and tested ok (so I thought). Cleaned all the connections and was still barely able to get...

I think the point Lavoy was making was simply that these crawlers aren't being made any more and parts get harder and harder to find. Just think of that as what seems like a small increase in power may result in catastrophic failure further down the line (finals, transmission, etc.) It is your crawl...

I found with my 420 on 6v I have to use 2/0 welding cables made into battery cables. Local battery shop (Batteries Plus) made them while I waited and I don't remember them being all that more expensive than what automotive cables were and good gosh did they make a difference. If you have heat that's...

Your expert advice to me has always been free on this board. The least we can do is be fair with you. I don't think there is anyone else that'll answer a cell phone on a Sat. afternoon and talk with me about a rebuilding a 420C final drive. That is truly priceless. Thanks again for everything. Jimm...

I don't have my books handy but I 've seen carbs that are set up as the negative pressure grows too large, a flap opens and allows the engine to run while the operator gets to the choke to turn it off. I have some military vehicles with carb like that. The spring pressure doesn't let the motor open ...

All of these fancy tools.. one won't get the full enjoyment of mashed fingers and the such!! I've been lucky, the tracks were just pinned and bushed on this crawler before purchase and the previous owner felt bolts were better than master pins. It now has master pins breaking them wasn't much of a h...

I haven't had the motor open but the quality of the work on the rest of the tractor... well nothing supprises me anymore. I guess just pull it down and we'll see where it goes. As I was tought years ago; you open it up and you don't worry what the problem was, rather you fix everything that isn't ri...

Internal Water Leak
So the lil green pain is back together, runs, and steers left and right! It has taken over 14 months but in that time span I've moved 3 times, graduated from NCSU, and changed jobs. Enough on that .. I noticed right before I pulled it apart that there was quite a bit of water in the crankcase. I had...

I just got this 420 back together yesterday afternoon. It's been apart for over 14 months. Got over the fear of the finals and did as you propose to do. Pulled everything off to the transmission case and even pulled the side that supports the diff/spool/ring gear carrier. (What ever you'd like to ca...

Mark- If you have the final off, go through it. Do you really want to get it all back together just to pull it off again?? Take it from someone who has done it..that it's not that bad nor complicated.. just takes time. New seals top and bottom on that final and you'll be miles ahead in the long run....
