Try what I told you about pushing on something to check when/if the steering clutch disengages, then go from there.

I haven't seen his ads on Craigslist for at least a couple years now.

Re: 1976 JD 550 dozer
The video that opens when I click your link is of a 450G, not a 450B. The B brake system most likely would not be like your 550, the 450G brakes should be similar. I can't say the guy is right or not, for your issues. You said the left stick has very little action. Does that mean it moves very littl...

Re: 1976 JD 550 dozer
Welcome to the Boards. A bit of housekeeping. Posts about your 550 should be made on the Late Models Board, this Early Models Board is for the 2010 crawlers and those built prior to that model. A moderator will likely move it over there when they see it. As for your steering issue, I don't know how ...

Re: Straight 450 Left Steering Lever Issue
Start with the complete steering clutch and brake adjustment, following the procedure in the manual. You will be able to see some when you have it open to do the adjustment. If you have access to a bore scope type camera you might be able to look around a bit more.

Re: Serial Number/ Engine overhaul
As far as I know the tag on the front of the battery box is it. Some have said that some machines had the serial number stamped on the differential housing on the flat area at the rear of the cover. Some stamping in that area may be related to the setup of the ring and pinion, not the serial number.

Re: what exactly do I have?
Welcome to the Boards. The tag in your picture is not a JD model/serial number tag. The tag should be on the left side of the bell/clutch housing, is larger, and has the model and serial number along with more info. If you search John Deere 420 specs (ag tractor not lawn tractor) Tractor Data has a ...

Re: Going Keyless...is it possible?
I suggest replacing the switch if needed and repair the wiring, then keep a spare key "in a discrete location" at the farm. Find a good hiding spot on the crawler and put the key there when leaving, not taking the key home, many do this.

Re: 350 loader bucket
Welcome to the Boards. I am going to say it will not fit without modifications to the mounting pin ears. There are no same part numbers used for the buckets of the two machines, that I found. You say it is local, best to go measure it up yourself to be sure. Measure the ears where it pins to the boo...

Re: Going Keyless...is it possible?
I can't see any pro to doing such. You will need a way to turn excitation to your alternator on and off (depending on the alternator you have) as well as control power to any electric gauges, except an ammeter which can stay live, you might have. A battery master switch located in a discrete locatio...

Below is a link to the 6300 Bulldozer parts catalog. Try using the part numbers you are looking for in your search, if you haven't.

Re: 450B Transmission and Engine Swap
I agree with Bruce. find a loader crawler and keep this one for parts. To me it does not have a great value as it sets. The biggest plus would be if that 15,000 they spent on repairs included a complete new undercarriage, a few hours before it got damaged and parked.

Re: 450B Transmission and Engine Swap
You posted sugar was put in the gas tank. Does it have a gas engine? A 450B should have a 4-cylinder 219 CID diesel engine. If it is diesel the 4219 engine was used in a lot of JDs, not just crawlers around that time frame. Some air compressors and generators also used the 4219. You should be able t...

Re: JD350 loader/crawler with 3315 winch
Welcome to the Boards. You posted the PTO control handle is moving and it feels like it is moving something inside. Confirm the handle is moving the shaft going into the transmission. Also, that the PTO shaft is not rotating (confirm it is the shaft out of the tractor that is not turning, not just t...

Re: Idler grease zerk ball bearing 450E
The 450G adjusters used a check valve with a zerk in one hole, instead of the zerk and set screw ball set up having two holes, side by side. Some of the 450G adjusters also had hinged covers over the zerk check valve. The zerk/check valve would be between ears that had holes for the cover hinge pin....
