Thanks Paul, I think I will try and fit the 35 links on there, and if it don't work, then time to put in the 36th link. Tractor was in pieces and is mostly back together. Need to paint the sping, and track adjuster, and 440 front idler then I can try the sprockets. Motor is in, and I am buttoning up...

Well so much for the 420 idler on the 440 bracket idea....

Hot wrench is probably next step.

Thanks for the input. I'll post a couple of pics when I get it all back together.

Did it that way once. What a pain it is. Almost better off pull engine and reverser out first... I loosened the cross member c channel frame to round tube cross member ( this is the front cross member.) Then jacked te rear ofthe tranny in the air and torqued the bolts back down so the tranny lip cle...

So I went out to pull dimensions, because I could have sworn a 420 idler is about an inch or so less in diameter. My 420 front idler is about 4'8" in circumference. The 440 is 5 ' circumference roughly. I measured area in contact with the rail. So if the link is about 5 inches long, and I have 35 li...

Could have sworn a 420 front idler was smaller diameter than a 440 front idler. I have a set of 420 front idlers. I like adding the extra rail link idea. How do I press out 1 link from an existing chain without a track press to do this? I figure all I need is a good bushing, and I can use a master p...

What set if tracks to put back on my 440?

Putting my 440 back together and I have a dilemma. I have three sets of tracks at the house from other dozers. The original set on this 440 was too far gone to salvage at all. First set is a 1010 4 bolts to hold te pad 36 links and pins and bushings worn almost enough that they need replaced. Proble...

440 steering lever bushing

Lavoy. Do you have any new bronze bushings for the steering lever into the clutch housing casting?

Sounds like the pinion bearing(s) are bad. Had that happen before. You pull back and you hear a grinding noise. (Grinding noise was the clutch disk wearing on the final drive casing. Since there was no bearing left, the steering clutch pack/ pinions shaft could travel in and out as it wanted to. And...

Did you make the proper adjustments with the throw out bearing, and brake band? I just installed a set of clutches on a 1010 and did the same thing. Wouldn't move because brake band was too tight. Just a thought.

I call 4th gear the laxative gear. No need for milk of magnesia with that gear.... Other terms I've used. Paint mixer gear White knuckle gear Loose your hat or glasses gear Gear you don't want to be in around your brand new car gear Hit a rock or large stick and think you died gear And finally, the ...

You have about an inch problem between the 1010 and early 440 sprocket. Late 440 with the beefier final drive uses the same sprocket as 1010 or it is darn close. I think this is a late 59 and 60 models only 440 that have the beefier final. So I am guessing your 1010 sprocket is rubbing on the inside...

Pretty sure there is a pin on the right side and left side. Did you pull both pins? Won't move if there is a pin in both forward arms and you only remove 1.

I had a similar problem. Turns out the master link in the track came out an inch or so and was grabbing the rock guard. Couldn't see it since the pin was on the bottom and getting stuck in a not so visible area. Also had a problem on a 1010 where the brake band was too tight and would cause the one ...

Hi Jay, looks like a decent dozer. What are your plans with it? Are you using as is, restoring? Does it run?

This is a great site for any and all problems.

Belly Pan Build up record?

Is this a record? If not, it's got to be close. I will let you know how many 5 gallon buckets by end of weekend. Oh it has the rear pan as well. Hoping to find plenty of sockets, wrenches, hose clamps, it's like digging for burried treasure! Andrew http://s758.photobucket.com/user/wizner85/media/201...
