Re: 40c sprocket bolts

Thanks Lavoy. That's what I will do. Yes studs are all in place. What about the sprocket that has the original 9/16" holes in it? How come the holes aren't tapered to accommodate the JD bolts or are the bolts not tapered originally?

40c sprocket bolts

Just finished replacing my track and idlers and rebuilding front idler assembly. Thought I would check sprocket bolts as well. One was stripped and others looked seedy so I bought 6 new JD21T from the local JD dealer. Went to install them today and found to my surprise that my bolts are 5/8" but the...

Re: Water in Oli

Thanks Ray. Good suggestion. I know that I have water in my hydraulic system as I left the crawler outside when the track came off it and the hydraulic system wouldn't work after a cold night. Ice in the valve probably. I had this problem before and as soon as it gets warm hydraulics work again. A f...

Re: Water in Oli

Thanks guys. I'll chase this down further when I get my track reinstalled. Thanks to Lavoy for the quick service and reasonable prices on idler bushings and seals, Diers used parts for the track and my local machinist for his great work on the front idler brackets and axle. The set screw had broken ...

Water in Oli

Oil in my 40c is milky so probably has water in it. Recent oil change, so not condensation. Anything I can do, preliminary to pulling the head, to help determine cause? A little history-crawler was purchased several years ago with seized and rusted engine. Pistons were driven out, cylinders cut and ...

Sod Pan or Skid Pates Wanted

I am looking for a Sod Pan and/or Front and Rear Bottom Plates (Skid Plates) for my John Deere 40c crawler. I believe the ones for the MC crawler and 420c crawler are the same. Any condition is ok. Don't want to put a rock through my oil pan or a stick through my radiator. Wouldn't be practical to h...

Re: 40c shifter

Everything back together and working well. New detent spring and ball for second gear, shifter bearing, snap rind and pin. A little tricky getting the shifter forks to drop into the grooves on the gears but worked on the 3rd try. Changed transmission fluid (pretty milky). Amazing how much moisture i...

Re: 40c shifter

What's the trick to riveting in the pin in the shifter tower. I used a small bolt as a jack inside the tower and tried to rivet the outside end over with a hammer and drift but afraid to hit it to hard. Don't want to break the casting

Re: 40c shifter

Lavoy, when you say to install the second clip on top of the first one, what holds it in place. I don't think 2 will fit in the groove but maybe I am wrong. Thanks
