Re: 40/420 head

Common in my experience. Original? head on my 40 cracked, replacement head from an M cracked and the original head on my son-in-laws MT cracked. 2 were repairable by the local machine shop, the 3rd one suffered a catastrophic break. As you probably know new ones are usually available. Check with Lav...

Re: Master pins

An older friend of mine used to call the snap rings "oh sh*t" washers from his usual expression when one would go flying off on it's own, never to be seen again

Re: Oh crap!

Probably. Have seen this happen a couple of times with friends 40 or 420 crawlers. Not a hard fix.

Re: Seafoam in Hydraulic System?

Thanks dtoots1. I'll have to wait for the weekend for temps above freezing so I will do it then. I am putting the dozer in a heated building for the winter at that time as well so I won't have any more problem with freezing but will still use the Seafoam to alleviate the moisture problem. Several ye...

Seafoam in Hydraulic System?

I must have a bit of water in the hydraulic system on my 40 crawler. It was below freezing a few days ago and the hydraulics would not work. Yesterday the temp was above freezing and today the hydraulics work fine. I changed the fluid a year ago and didn't see any water at that time. I suspect there...

Re: 1010 gas crawler loader leaking coolant

It would be helpful to know where you are located. There are rad shops in various areas that do a lot of work on vintage radiators and if needed can often build you a new one. Maybe you could add your location to your info.

Re: Rear PTO and 3 Point hitch questions

The 40c as well had provision for 2 PTO shafts on the rear of the transmission. One for Standard PTO attachment providing 560 rpm and one for auxiliary equipment requiring higher speed and provides engine speed (1850 rpm) for such things as winches and hydraulic pumps. I think MC crawlers had a simi...

Re: Any body play around with rubber pads on 420 or other crawlers?

Like Stan, I have never seen the actual Rubber Shoe but there are pictures of it, along with all of the other types of shoes, in my 40c parts catalog. It looks like they have a bevel around the edges and have 2 integral studs to use nuts to affix them to the pads. Can't tell the size so I don't know...

Re: 420c steering to the right...

I have a 40c that ended up with the adjustment bolt almost to the end of the slot when adjusted correctly as well. Probably just a result of accumulated wear in the various working parts. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it is adjusted by the book and works properly. Other opinions may vary.

Re: zenith 14997 carb

Others can correct me if I am wrong, but I would adjust it following the same procedure that is recommended for the original carb. Whatever your initial adjustment, you are going to change it anyway following the "trial and error" process recommended in the manual.

Don't know much about this but can the bad journal(s) be spray welded and remachined? Just a thought.

Re: Dry in the head

The hole that is "far right" is probably for the sending unit for the hour meter. It was an option so if you don't have it the hole would just have a plug in it.

Re: 420 crawler 1957

Hi Kevin. You probably got your problem solved long ago but, just in case, I am in New Brunswick as well and went through a complete rebuild of my 40c engine, which is similar, several years ago. I had the work done at Engine Rebuilding and Supply here in Saint John. Total cost at that time was arou...

Re: No. 61 Bulldozer?

Thanks again Lavoy. I took a look at the parts diagrams for the MC60 and my blade and Boom assembly are definitely the more rugged 61. The side bracket that the cylinder attaches to, I'm not so sure. The notch looks pretty rough cut so I think some parts have been made or modified by a previous owne...

Re: No. 61 Bulldozer?

Lavoy. Thanks for the concern. If you can look at the parts sheet for the 61, the cylinder (don't think it's original) on mine is connected at the top to the Right Frame (J19422C) and at the bottom to the Lifting Frame (J19421C). The Lifting Frame is a complete assembly with arms on both sides conne...
