Re: komatsu pc10-6 mini excavator
Be very careful if it's a grey market machine. Parts for those can sometimes be tricky to get as you can't get any parts from domestic dealers. My mini is fantastic for working around the yard, and general small digging jobs. I use it a lot to pick up and move things, and it's amazing how much it wi...

Re: 450C near death accident
Thanks for posting that. While all equipment is dangerous, the old iron is far worse. My 06 Kubota mini ex has a FOPS cab and control locks where it automatically de-energizes all the hydraulics when you pull the lock level. My 40c obviously has none of that. The worst of the 40 is the winch. I have...

Re: Steam Boilers
My good friend's dad was a union boiler operator in Jersey for several decades. He made six figures and retired in his 60s with a full pension. After sitting around for a bit he started operating again as a per diem operator and made pretty close to what he was making full time on top of his pension...

I'd suggest making sure you copyright it before releasing anything.

Re: Adding to the Fleet
I have a Kubota 121 mini, which is about 9,000lbs. It's got a thumb, and I use a 4' piece of I beam for fine grading. It's a really nice size, as it's big enough to pop a few stumps (albeit slowly) but I can still move it with my one ton. Just can't expect it to do the work of a larger machine. I mo...

Re: Saving manuals that are coming apart
I scan my older manuals and put the original in the file cabinet. I then print off a shop copy that is pretty much disposable. For the thicker manuals I will only print the sections that I need when I need them.

Re: rubber tracks
FWIW, I hate the rubber tracks on my mini excavator. They are terrible in the woods, especially when it's wet, and completely useless in the snow.

Re: Tool box
Right side fender is where I put my tool box on my 40c. Hydraulics are in the way for climbing on and off on that side anyway. I use it to carry a few tools and chain chokers for the winch.

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
Lavoy, do you have 6v LED lights or just the bulbs? My 40c didn't come with lights, so I'm just running the cheap 6V reproduction lights that I don't believe have replaceable bulbs. If they are full lights what is the pricing?

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
I use my 40c a fair bit at night in the winter plowing and dragging trails. I would love to do a true 12v conversion so I could run some LED lights. I've looked high and low for 6V LEDs but they don't seem to exist. Plus it would be nice to eliminate the oddball 6V battery from the fleet (good 6V ba...

Re: JD 420C Track Project
I often wonder if you couldn't adapt a set of tracks off an air-track drill. I see old ones pop up for sale every now and then and they have small undercarriages.

Re: JD 420C Track Project
I have a Kubota mini excavator with rubber tracks and I do not like them. They tend to stretch and pop off at the worst times (no rock guards on the excavator), and they cut pretty easily in the woods. The worst part is they are downright scary in the winter. Luckily I only use the excavator for cut...

Re: So What Happens To the Tooling?
Makes sense. In this day and age, at least all the new stuff is saved for posterity in digital files that truly do have almost zero storage cost. And now it's easy to scan an old part and create a file, so hopefully things will only continue to get easier for us fans of the obsolete to keep our stuf...
