I "fixed" my winch by cleaning both brake bands with soap and ammonia solution , then washing down, sandpapered the drums, and cleaning with brake cleaner and paper towels. I followed by cooking the bands with an acetelyne torch as described previously. I then adjusted them as described in the manua...

Ok, so what and how much is added to the gas to make up for the missing tetraethyl lead? Thanks.

Thanks for the reminder about closed drums - I was thinking about the rain barrel that I over turn and didn't clarify. Thanks too for the other insights. I know that sometimes sweat equity is more readily available than cash, meaning that I've made some repairs that I knew I'd have to redo at a late...

Well I guess that putting a Marvel oil through a Marvel Carb should produce some magic somewhere - hopefully good. I think I'll go other routes first - I'm a bit cautious about using additives, but since the non lead fuels have had something removed, I'll assume that there will be a reaction - like ...

I'm curious, On winch brake bands I've had good results a number of times burning off soaked oil with a welding torch. I take the band to a metal table (55gal drum on end) so I don't have to worry about a fire, and heat it section by section until the whole thing has been dried. I usually see some w...

I believe I have a TSX 688 carb. My reading of the manual says that the idle jet controls air flow - closed, richer mix, out leaner mix, as Levoy says too. I did use compressed air and carb cleaner on everything when I had it disassembled looking at the manual as I went. I thought that I had checked...

Thanks for the input. There's a lot of experience shared on this board and I appreciate everyones ideas; keep 'em coming. I plan on resetting the valves soon, and I'll take apart the carburator again and see what I find. The venturi is a press fit, and felt snug. Should it be bedded with something?

420 c rough idle

Hi: My 420 c sort of lopes when idling. I rebuilt the carburetor earlier this year without changing the idle jet - it looked smooth and the seat appeared undamaged. The tractor runs well under load and has plenty of power and starts easily, so I'm assuming that the timing, plugs and wires - which I ...

Thanks, I'm getting 125 and 128. My machine came with a glopped up air cleaner, and it appears that it was run that way for quite a while. I cleaned everything up and tuned the engine to specs, and it seems to be running quite well. I changed the oil yesterday and a lot of carbon bits (no metal) cam...

420 gas cylinder compression

Does anyone know how many pounds of compression a tight 420 gas engine runs? Thanks.

Dozer

Stan: I really liked my 450c dozer with a six way inside blade, winch, ROPS, and arch. I bought it new in 1978 for about $25,000 (sigh). I liked its relative simplicity and reliability. I could run it all day on about 5 gallons of fuel which meant that jerry can fueling worked. We worked on steep an...

Are you sure you need the crow foot wrench? I couldn't find individual crow feet for sale - only sets. I just adjusted my tracks on a 420c using a 1 1/2" combination wrench that I bought for $9 and change from Tractor Supply. Northern Tool also has inexpensive large size, good quality wrenches (and ...

John Deere Parts Catalogues

I'm not sure what went wrong. I just copied the link from "http through_Alt" and pasted, and it took me to the necessary page. From there I typed "420" and got what I needed. You could try working your way through the John Deere site as well. Good luck. Paul

Dumbp Truck Tale

Loaded a 5yd truck with random firewood log lengths - nicely stacked, a little long, but counterbalanced over the cab a bit. Let out the clutch and rose into the sky parking it on its tail. Of course this was done in front of an all-knowing audience. With some careful log removal with a log loader a...
