You have a hydraulic reverser. The handle on the dash operates a rotary valve by cable. The reverser has two clutch packs. They should have 25psi to disengage and 180 (as I recall) to engage. If the release pressure is insufficient or the plates are warped one or both packs will "drag". Start with a...

Sounds more and more like a reverser problem - not an engine problem.

I agree with Lavoy. It is hard to imagine wearing out an engine to that point if you can't do any work with the machine. If you have a PTO put a load on it and make sure the problem is really in the engine.

Does it make a difference whether the engine is hot or cold?

40's are famous for backfiring if they get a too-lean mixture. They don't fire on one stroke because the mixture is too lean, and then the missed fuel ignites on the next exhaust stroke. Look for any way it can get too much air or too little fuel. The throttle butterfly shaft is often overlooked, an...

A quick boost using 12 volts won't hurt anything. You can leave everything in place except the hot (negative) booster cable. Engage the starter using the 6 volt system, and while it is engaged touch the hot lead directly to the post on the starter. You can do this for a few seconds of fast spin with...

Make sure the camshaft is in the right position to get a full stroke on the fuel pump primer handle. When the cam is in the "pushed" position you won't get any or much stroke with the primer lever and you will pump forever.

No, but a good place to start. The important thing is for the track to run true on the front idler. Tighten both springs until the track tension is good and you think both springs are pushing evenly. Then drive forward about ten feet on level ground, stop without touching the clutches or brake, and ...

If this is a 3-roller 40C then you should have two springs on each track. Tighten the track with the other spring (you may have to nudge it a little if it binds), then loosen the adjuster of the spring that came off. You may have to compress the spring some to put the fork back in depending on the c...

Generally, white smoke from a diesel means low compression (or cold engine, but not in my clime). Check your air cleaner and look for intake restrictions first, then a compression test.

I'm pretty sure it will clear if you slide the shaft back into the ring gear housing. But someone cut off the stuff in the way on my 40C since it had no real purpose.

Sounds like you assembled it by the book, which doesn't show that the first fiber plate goes BEHIND the snap ring.

You can remove the rollers and build up the "cones" with weld and turn them down to match the roller body AND each other. Having machinist kinfolk helps. You can also turn the cones 180 degrees, but then they won't necessarily match the roller body. Grease heavily regardless.

Taking off the fuel tank, etc. is the hard way. Make two 12"x 1/2" threaded rods to fit where you remove the 1/2" bolts and use them to slide the whole unit out (after removing the sprocket, which you can lift or roll by hand). Then support it, remove the rods, and roll it all out.
