Your brake band needs to be tightened.
The 1st gear noise is wear.
Make sure the oil level is up.
Some Lucas oil stabilizer helps to quiet some noise.

All gears work with the reverser in forward.
Doesn't move with reverser shifted to the rear in any gear.

The only way to backup is reverser in forward and trans in reverse.

I just have one that came in that doesn't work with the reverser in reverse.
Supposedly the reverser has been rebuilt.
Am looking for clues.

What goes wrong when the trans is in reverse and the reverser is as well?

If your top covers leak or come off you have a way to drain the water out.

These are for when you clean out your clutch packs.
Usually dry.
Sometimes oil leaks into there.

2 or 3 washers behind the spring.
Is alwaYs good to test with a master gauge.

I just looked in the service manual...
The pan has to be dropped and the regulating plug is above the screen and pump.

There should he a large nut with an Allen bolt just below the oil filter.
Loosen the nut ,
Back out the Allen some.
Check pressure again.

From what I have seen over the last 15 years of playing with old iron it is quite important to check valve clearance as a regular maintenance item. My '56 phase I JD 420 T has seen several hours of hard work. I have adjusted the exhaust valves 4 times in the last 10 years and gained back compression...
