Hi,

It does look grey in that photo.

Yes, I know it's B&W and it's *all* grey! :P

Farmall Red in a B&W photo looks more like black or dark blue, and that T20 is way too light in shade, so it was probably grey.

Said the long-time B&W photographer. :)

Hi, The old fashioned method was to, and I'm not kidding, build a fire under the engine! This used to be in some old tractor manuals back when they were still on steel! I always like the old diesel starting method of the pony motor. That little gas engine would fire right up in the cold, and then wa...

Hi,

Weren't the MC doors just an M door cut down the middle with the second hinge added. I'm trying to picture one in my mind, but it's been a while since I've seen one.....

I mean, they made the thing up so why can't we?

Later!

Hi, Oh, yeah! I am the Master of the Steam Cleaner! That was my job at the old tractor shop starting about the time I was 10. The grade school was across the street from the shop. My schoolmates would see me steam cleaning all sorts of stuff on a daily basis. Dad didn't like to work on grimy things ...

Hi, Yes, I've seen combines with track options before as well, but have no references (as in manuals) for them. Nothing says that Deere used the same track parts on the combines as they did on the crawlers. Which is, of course, why I asked in the first place - hoping that someone either knew or had ...

Hi, Yup. Starting Fluid equals Ether. Basically, used only as a last resort when the weather is cold and you just gotta get the thing going. It's main use as I've experienced it, is to ruin diesel engines requiring more frequent overhauls. I think that's why Deere put starting fluid input ports on t...

Combine tracks on eBay

Hi, I ran across a set of tracks for a Deere model 55 combine. I'm wondering, as is the seller, if these might be useful on one of the old JD crawler models? eBay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320186953002&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011 They are in Kansas, so a bit to...

Hi, My plan is (a) to play with the grandkids, and then (b) eat too much, and then (c) sit in front of the old flat panel and not watch football. :P Oh, football with be *on* the big screen, but *I'll* not be watching it because of (a) and (b)! :P :P Now, grandma is a much bigger fan of football tha...

hi, I always get confused by what 'antique' means. Sometimes I hear 25 years, others 100 years, and then just about every 5 years in between the two! ;) So, I go by my age. If it's older than me, it's a 'classic' if it's twice as old as me it's an 'antique', and if it's younger then me, it's 'newfan...

Hi,

As I recall, there was also a 450BE, where the 'E' stood for economy, that had a gear tranny and a hyd direction reverser in place of the HLR.....

You know, Deere loves to do things like that. I think it's just to confuse us! :P

Hi,

Yeah. My 'good' and other folks 'good' are different as well as your 'nice'.

I've come to the conclusion that 'U/C 50%' means that the grouser height on the pads is half of what it was when new. Also, 'new U/C' means that someone has welded repair strips to the grousers! :P

hi, Man! That *is* the worst set of sprockets I have ever laid eyes on. How in heck does that one drive the rail at all??? This is a great set of pix, though. Every time I get to thinking that my 420c is looking really old and ratty, some kind soul posts some pix on here of a machine that makes mine...

Hi, The snow shoes are the ones with the holes in the center so that the sprocket teeth can push the packed snow out of the inner section of the rails. Snow has this tendency to build up in there, and if it stays put the rails will climb away from the sprockets, overtightening the rails. Also, the s...
