Am I reading this correctly, that there is nasty whining noise in the pump while the backhoe is off the machine?
Are the hoe hoses unhooked from the hoe and NOT hooked back together?

The HLR is something that can be re-sealed.

Re: JD 450C hlr trouble in reverse only
The engine is mounted with four bolts to the bell housing. The unfortunate thing is that all the stuff attached and ahead of the engine need to come out.

Yes, engine will need to come out. Several good things that you don’t need to remove. Final drives, steering clutches. Sorry for you situation. When done it will be a great machine.

Re: JD 450C hlr trouble in reverse only
Your situation as you have described sounds like the reverse clutch pack is slipping. I would be suspicious of leaking oring in the reverse pack.

Consider checking the linkage adjustment. Follow the H/L/R lever down to the battery box and along the transmission. There are adjustable joints there.

Re: Hunting Idle JD 450B
How long did you run the engine after the filter change. It sounds like air in the fuel system (kinda fits with the filter change). The is a priming lever to pump up the fuel. This lever is attached to the mechanical fuel pump on the right side of the engine, towards the front. My experience is that...

I may be mistaken, but I believe the tool is the same tool used for 5.9 Cummins. There are many inexpensive aftermarket tools for this available online.

Re: Adding a Tachometer
The tach drive is near the right rear near the cylinder head. Very near the valve cover. And if I remember it is vertically oriented.

Doubtful. I don’t believe you can torque the bolts tight enough to hold and make up the bolt - hole difference.

Re: Engine clutch has oil on it
Is the weep hole open in the bottom of the bell housing? If this is plugged for a long time, condensate will add up to a lot and it wouldn’t take only a little oil to cloud the water. Especially since you had said your levels have not changed and you have not added .

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration
Do not run your machine until the problem is identified. It sounds like you have a deadhead scenario. This can wipe your pump out very quickly. I would start by looking carefully at the disconnects.

Re: JD 450B - no vin tag
There are many different ways to route hyd to your ripper. If you look inside the right box, with the hyd 6 way blade, you can see your hyd valve control stack. Sometimes there is an extra unused stack that you could plumb into. You may have to add a lever if you don’t already have one coming up out...

Third option. Keep your crawler as a donor. Buy a good B series and you have a abundance of parts. This is what I did. Retired tired iron, keep them, but upgraded to better machine.
