Around here the Amish use horse pulled carts called PTO Carts that have an engine that powers PTO equipment. With auxiliary hydraulics, they can mount 3 point hitch and pto driven equipment behind the tower intermediary unit so that horses can pull 3 point hitch/pto stuff. Why not just buy an old tr...

The Caterpillar Tracked Skidder; I don't care much for the living cat as all he catches is a daily nap, and in one year here has never caught a mouse. I was curious as to the differences between a bulldozer set up to do logging and a tracked skidder, but in watching the video it is hard to compare t...

Tree Farm

Does anyone else belong to the Tree Farm System? I have put it off for years, but now that I have a decent crawler that can really log all of my woodlot and not just part of it, I started the process of certification. This is different than Tree Growth so there is no property tax benefits to what I ...

I know this is a John Deere Dozer message board and I do not wish to be too disrespectful, but I know Cat makes a Tracked Skidder which implies it was purpose built for logging, where as the 650 John Deere is more of a machine that was adapted for the role. I have always wondered what the in-seat di...

LearnardL beat me to it. I had this issue when I got my JD 350D and it was/still is the main clutch pedal. It sticks but despite lubing up all the linkages; when first started up, the clutch might not engage all the way. After a bit it frees up, or I can pull back with the top of my foot. I just nee...

When I was in diesel tech school we repaired equipment for taxpayers with the understanding that they had to pay for parts, and we did it as time allowed. Anyway this guy came into the school a few times to have his bush hog PTO shaft crosses repaired. On the third trip the Diesel Tech Teacher asked...

I wish they kept making them with 3 point hitches and PTO shafts. I might actually give up my first born daughter for that on my 350D. Now I say daughter only because I am only allowed daughters...I have 4 and no son. Of course with 4 daughters...the boys are sure to follow. As a side note: as the y...

I'll check it out Lavoy though I am not sure how much business I can drum up out your way. I would like to, you have been more than kind to me over the years I have been on here.

PS: I am on Facebook, but not a lot.

Generally the weight ratio is 60/40 on equipment. I know this is true on skidders and bucket-loaders, and I assume on tracked skidders too. By that I mean empty they are designed to have 60% of their weight over the front axle, and 40% of their weight over their back axle when EMPTY. However, when p...

I agree with you Paul. We had John Deere 1010 and while its winch never worked what we did to make it productive was ground skid the wood to a scoot, then roll the wood onto a scoot and then at break, lunch or when it was time to go home, go out with a scoot load of wood. We could get 200-2500 bf of...

A hard lesson in proper dozering...

A few years ago I got a grant from the USDA to build a road across my property to get to a distant field. I cannot say God forgot to shut off the faucet that year because he does not make mistakes, but he did leave the hose running that if for sure. IT WAS WET! As we built the roadway, the trucks wo...

I rented that one to clear a 12 acre field of stumps. If I had the chance you had, I would jump at it. I honestly need two bulldozers, a small one for logging and a big one to clear stumps. An excavator works really well at ripping stumps out, but with a dozer you can rip the stump out AND push them...

Yes for the kids it is really sad. He was a good father too. Cub scouts, soccer and all that. never drank, did drugs or any of that, just worked and tried to keep the wife and kids happy. An all around good guy. For me its sad because now that I finally got a dozer and can do stuff with, I got no on...

Now that my dozer-friend, is funny!

I was going to have my wife pose on my new-to-me crawler as she is very pretty, but with terminology like this floating about, now I am not so sure. (I am just joking obviously, it takes a lot to offend me).
