http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff437/440ironpopper/IMG00066-20110521-1851.jpg Anybody remember this one? It's been there all winter. I was swearing like a demon when this happened... Anyway snow cleared and I finally got some work done on it. I found the problem: I opened the pinion ...

2 cylinders gas engine
Is there a known weak point in these engines that should be checked while it is off the crawler? I had a good compression, normal oil pressure before dismantling the whole machine. I'll remove the head to do a check and the oil pan is no big deal too if needed. Thanks!

It looks like you need 2 manuals for the ICD. Go at this link: https://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/index.cfm?event=productSearch type 440 in the keyword field. Then at the second page of search results I think the books you are looking for will be there. SM2023 and SM2028. It can be downloaded too. Ch...

Oh now I see. This is not an easy one. My crawler has been apart for a while allowing me to access everything. I missed some steps... I understand you want to minimize dissassembling. Could an Hammer puller be right? With a small 90 deg angle leg at the end. Then pull it a bit on each side alternate...

I don't know much about the 350's but I did some transmission work yesterday on my 440. I posted it in show and tell. To remove cups I had to remove pretty much everything. Then I can drive cups out with a 1/2 round steel bar and a good hammer from inside the case. If you have a bad bearing there it...

Looking for Shim pack
I use aftermarket bearings in my 440 rebuilt. I tought these companies had various shims matched with their bearings. I didn't find anything on the internet. Timken, skf etc etc. All shim part numbers on jdparts.com are ''not existing anymore''. I'm looking for the square cover transmission shims as...

Permatex makes good products. I'll give a try with High tack. I used a lot of their gasket maker with old Detroit and Cat engines in addition with a good gasket... where dissassembling again if it leaks means pain in the ass. Recently Cat changed its ''compounds and gasket maker stuff'' to loctite. ...

Thanks Whiteclipse. Actually I brought the dissassembled finals to an ex-john deere mechanic who repairs old crawlers at his own shop. Just to be shure I don't put my money in the fire if I repair these. About the axle/gear he says he can save it with a bit of machining. I don't know what are his pr...

http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff437/440ironpopper/DSCN0855.jpg The final bracket. The book says to do it with 1/2 round stock  . Maybe with the later housings not with mines. I modified it to fit. The bolts holes are 7/16. 13 inches center to center. So I cut the 1/2 legs and welded 2 s...
