Re: reverser oil flow question

A friend and I have studied the tech manual trying to figure out the oil flow and where a piece of gasket material would cause a problem. We came up with a theory that a small piece of material (think a crescent moon shape) would flow through the oil pressure regulating valve, oil cooler bypass valv...

reverser oil flow question

I have a straight 450 that has had a problem for some time that I can’t get figured out. The transmission pump pressure will come up when first started to 130-150 psi. I can shift the reverser from forward to reverse a couple of times and the tractor will move both directions. The pressure starts dr...

I removed the accumulator housing to check it and the shift valve. I disassembled to check for scoring or binding in the valves. Everything was smooth and free. There is a small screen that fits in the housing that was damaged with one end of it partially plugging one of the passages. I bought a new...

I’m back to square one with a new pump installed. I talked with a mechanic that works on most all brands of older track machines. He didn’t think that the pump was the problem, but I crossed my fingers, forked out $600 and replaced it anyway. It turned out to be a $600 mistake although I have ruled ...

There is a needle valve on the side of the accumulator housing that regulates the shift speed. Chances are that the valve needs to be adjusted. The only experience that I have is with a 450 and it has a plug on the side of the transmission case to access the valve. The valve has a slot for a screwdr...

450 straight HLR problems (long)

I have had the motor, clutch housing and front cover out three times since my last post and the top cover off at this time. The first time I removed everything I found a piece of gasket material under the oil cooler bypass valve. I put it back together and it wouldn’t move and the clutch didn’t feel...

It sounds more like you have some worn out parts on the gear selector and or linkage. There is a procedure for adjusting the steering clutches and brakes. It’s on here somewhere. I adjusted mine according to the procedure and then tweaked it a little to fit me better. Check all of the linkage and th...

Thanks for the reply Tigerhaze. Here is a thread that I started when I had a transmission oil leak. The last page is where I am now but it’s still not working properly. I bought a new transmission line and replaced the cracked and brazed one. That didn’t help. I still have the buzzing noise and I’m ...

Straight 450 reverser problem?

I have a straight 450 loader with a problem. At first startup I drove it about 200 yards in forward and stopped to select a lower gear. When I shifted the reverser back into forward it wouldn’t move. I tried reverse with no luck. I shut it down, checked the oil level “GOOD” and walked back to the sh...

I know this is kinda old but there is a weep hole in the clutch housing that should have a cotter pin in it. The cotter pin dosn't do anything but keep the hole open. If it plugs again just twist the cotter pin around and it will clear the hole.

ITi That problem happens quite often with the dry clutches if they are not used. If you can get it against an immovable object just pull back on the lever and let dig. Sometimes that will break the clutches loose from the plates. Take tjrichard’s advice and don’t use any kind of oil on the clutches....

Sometimes it is hard to find out where the oil is leaking.
You can look through this thread to see what I went through to find a transmission leak.

Leonard, I’m glad to see you haven’t left entirely. Dealing with people can be aggravating sometimes. I’m reminded of a quote “You can’t fix stupid” from Ron (tater salad) White. While most people don’t fall in that category some just do. I have a friend that is in the armed service that could not c...

You should be able to pull the seat cushion and see the top of the transmission. Clean all of the oil and grease off of the transmission with a pressure washer. Start it and look for the leak. There aren’t any pressure ports that go into the transmission top cover on a 450B but the rotating componen...

Thanks to everyone for all of the help with this loader. I got the loader reassembled over the weekend. When I mounted the clutch housing I let the clutch adjustment bolt fall and it bound up against the transmission pump. I had to pull it back off to get the bolt where it needed to be then set it b...
