So... Without it, the tractor starts fine. I guess the only possibility is something to do with a potential backfire into the air intake system. I've never seen that on any other rigs. Curious, at best. I would be surprised if a backfire could ignite the oil in the breather. We did, by the way, make...

Don, The flapper may have been backward on my choke assembly. I assumed it was the other way around. Complete choke, when closed completely, and a release for excessive pressure in the case of a backfire. If mine is incorrectly installed, then my logic is...backward. I will study it more on my retur...

Don, I'm going to print this, and hope I don't miss-place it. I have the cat in the shop, and we will be leaving, soon, so I won't get back to it until spring. I did, though, clean up all the grounding, or contact, surfaces on the generator. It should be well grounded, but one never knows. Thanks, G...

I built a tool, for pin removal, from rail road tie plates. It has a grade 8 bolt that on which an impact wrench can be placed. It spans the chain with the pads removed. Problem is, I tried it on the regular pins after I had the master pin removed. It wouldn't budge the regular pins, but it might wo...

Jac, Ok, I'll give it a try, but not until spring, I think. We are getting ready to pull out for a couple months in the desert southwest sun, and away from the cold and wet. I just put the cat in the shop. I have been simply charging the battery everynight. It really doesn't use much power for 4 or ...

Lavoy, Yes, it is smoothing out as I run it. It's the little problems that are driving me nuts. Not a days goes by without something busting. Yesterday, it was the tit off the flapper plate that fed into the intake side, and raised hell. Nothing broke, but I had to pull the head where it sat to make...

Shawn, It very slowly corrected itself, today. After about an hour of pushing dirt, the cutting out stopped completely. I had added another five gallon of clean gas on top of the 5 gallon of stuff tainted with diesel fuel. That's why I think that may have been the culprit. If it choses to pitch a fi...

Curious 420 choke problem
Near the end of the day, and after a day of good running, the 420 started making very strange internal noises. Not clunks, but more like a rapid succession of "tinks." I shut it down immediately, and cursed and pondered a bit. I noticed the choke was sort of jammed. I pulled the intake hose, and fou...

cutting out problem fixed
I ran a recent thread about my 420 cutting out under load. I changed the filter because it appeared to be partially plugged. Didn't help much. I took off the carb, and went completely through it. There was slight improvement. I decided to work it a bit, and see what happened. It gradually improved i...

Scott, The inline filter I think is a paper element. It's one of the cheap plastic ones. After I removed it, it was obviouls loaded with rust. That did not, however, fix the problem. I took the carb off, and thoroughly cleaned it. It was running well, but I don't know about under load. It was again ...

Jac, If I understand correctly, you are saying that the engine should be running when the polarization is done? I didn't know that, but I will try it in the morning. I'm still fighting an engine miss, too. I changed the filter. That didn't help, although the filter was considerably plugged. I then c...

Stan, My charger is quite small; perhaps one of the smallest. I bought it for my bike, but it will also do six volt, so I use it on the tractor. I have begun monitoring the juice in the battery, but I'm quite sure there is no generating going on. I will pull the unit, in the spring, and have it re-t...

Jim, No, it doesn't have the strainer at the carb. It doesn, though, have an inline filter between the sediment bowl, and the carb. That should provide better filtering than the screens, and may well be the culprit. I do have a spare, so I will install it, and see what happens. May not be able to pu...
