Re: 1978 JD450C change tranny fluid and filter?

Hi, I could really use some pointers. My rig has trans fluid w/ water (looks like a latte). It drives fine but wants be weak or not go if you decide to stop while pushing dirt. Needs a head of stem or it does not want to know. Q. Will you please give me the basics on how change fluid and filter? Th...

Use the oil that is specified for your finals in the Deere Service Manual for your machine. Ma Deere will sell it to you in various formats on-line or they will sell you a download so you can have it right away. If you don't have the SM yet, it should be one of the first things you get for your new...

450 final drive question

I started changing the fluid in the final drives of 450 that I just got. I removed the drain plug and to my surprise out came gear oil. All the documentation I've seen about this crawler says that it's supposed to use JD hydraulic fluid in the final drives. Is this something that was changed over ti...

It sounds to me like you may have over-tighted the brake actuator screw on the right side. I would start over with the process on the right side and try again. Maybe you had the brake band cranked up too tight when adjusting the top? If you're hitting the brake before the clutch is fully disengaged,...

I looked it up on jdparts.deere.com and it doesn't appear so. The 450 and 350 seems to share one instrument panel. It was the one for 5 guages which I'm guessing was only for HLR transmissions, but serial number might play into it too. The 350B has a different gauge layout altogether. There are 4 gu...

You might find this older post interesting, especially Digitup's comments about how many wrenches he found in the bottom of a steering clutch housing! http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=1904&highlight=lost+wrench That's great. I pictured a guy running to the store to buy m...

Hehe. I didn't have any string handy, but after that I was holding those wrenches so tightly that my knuckles turned white :)

I was adjusting the steering clutchs on my 450

I just got this 450 and am in the processes of adjusting everything and changing all the fluids. I went through the service manual instructions for adjusting the steering clutches and SLIP dropped my 9/16" wrench down in the housing. After swearing a bit, I went to borrow my nieghbor's grabber tool ...

When you push in the clutch pedal, you just just splitting the clutch packs in the trans, nothing to do with the engine clutch. If I guesses wrong, someone correct me please. Sorry, I'm just using the wrong term then. I was just referring to the foot clutch. I don't know if there's a lever to disen...

450 engine clutch

I have a 1967 450 with HLR transmission. The engine clutch works fine to disengage movement, but it does not seem to work very well for engaging the PTO or shifting between gear ranges. This is easy enough to work around by just turning the engine off first, but what is really broken here? Am I dama...

3325 winch control valve

I just bought my first crawler: a 1967 JD 450. It has a 3325 winch on it, but the free-spool mode doesn't work. I took the brake apart and the spool spins fine. With the brake disassembled, the brake cylinder extends with no leaks. It just doesn't have any pressure to activate the cylinder when the ...
