mc

Are you interested in the MC because of the price, condition or because its yellow .Like Lavoy says what its worth is up to you.If the color matters to you then before you buy you might want the Two Cylinder Club to do a serial number search to see if the machine you are looking at came from the plan...

Tracks

If you rerim your current sprockets with 350 ones you can run 350 rails. My local dealer offered me new 350 tracks complete for around $1600 per side for non sealed units. That is not cheap but all new components. One of the posters here adapted rubber tracks on his 420c.That was a neat setup.Luck,Ji...

track shop

This subject has come up many times before.A lot of us here have thought about having pins and bushings made. Some have actually done the reseach and decided that it was not cost effective.John Deere has pins and bushings available for lots of money per item.I got a few sets of aftermarket pins and b...

Tracks

The measurements I posted were taken from idlers that are not mounted. When I made them the parts allowed direct diameter verification. The 440 idlers are NOS and the 420 ones are used. You may be able with used parts run 35 link tracks on a 440.Its up to you to give it a try.I would like to know if i...

Tracks

Both 440 and 420/430 front idlers are roughly 19" in diameter at the area in rolling contact with the rail.Master pins have a head that has flats to keep the pin from rotating. This means that the rail must be notched to accomodate pin head. Also the opposite side must be ground down to make room for ...

Tracks

The front idler on the 440 and 420/430 five roller are the same diameter. The track frame of the 440 is longer overall than the 420/430. You need 36 links for the 440 so adding a link to a 420 track is the best option. If it were mine I'd go with the best rails as pins and bushings can be replaced but...

Fuels

Paul, Higher octane fuel in any engine should not be a problem. As I understand it lower octane fuel can cause detonation in high compression engines like in a chainsaw.Unlike the spark knock in a 1974 Pinto you really can't hear detonation in a 2stroke.Nothing I have seen has warned against too high...

Fuel

Paul, For what its worth,I run non ethanol fuel,Stabil and octane booster in my Stihls. Chainsaws are like racing engines and everything I read says stay away from ethanol fuels in two stroke gas engines.Stabil and cheap pump gas in all my tractors.I haven't had any problems with fuel issues in any ...

Battery Charger

Brian, If you are referring to using the battery charger for electrolysis rust removal forget it.It wont work to free the pins from the bushings. To use electrolysis to remove rust you need an anode and cathode immersed in an electrolyte. To remove rust from the pin or bushing with this set up the on...

Three roller

According to an article in the Two Cylinder magazine John Deere intended to introduce it's new and improved four roller 40c with the rest of the 40 line up.The Korean war delayed this rollout because of metal and tooling shortages.Oddly the number of these machines is about the same as the 430c and ...

Bow chainsaw

JWO, I haven't had surgery but I've had back strains for years. The one thing I finally learned is when the back starts to hurt I definitely stop what I'm doing.I have found that the bow really helps with back strain. Paul, Thanks for posting the photos and diagram. The stance is correct for both guys...

Bow chainsaw

Paul, You are right about the relative safety issue.Tree cutting is at best dangerous.Down south on flat ground, feller bunchers handle the pulpwood now.Full length logs go to the mill instead of cordwood. Whole trees chipped go by box trailers to the pulp mills. I used the same bucking techniques yo...

Bow chainsaw

JWO, The classic chainsaw bow didn't meet the ansi kickback standards. I don't know if they have been banned from manufacture but insurance requirements and OSHA killed the bow.No doubt the bow has a fearsome reputation but when properly guarded has less chain exposed than even a 10" bar.I use the b...
