Almost Like A Rubbery Smell...........

My 1984 John Deere 455D crawler / loader with 7300 hours, ( if correct, I suspect less hours ) is now running great. Lots of power, starts right up, no leaks, runs as it should. In this hot weather, around 90 here in Maine, when I use it, the exhaust has a smell almost like a hint of burning rubber....

The dozer had a full tank of 31 gallons old diesel. I talked to the Power Service Representative and he said to drain out 1/2 the tank, add double dose of silver bottle and double dose of their tank cleaner and fill up with new diesel. I did that and I'm going to run it tomorrow. Thanks, Frank

The oiler is a great idea but you would need about 50 of them to oil everything beneath the floorboards. I'd rather just oil them all while doing my normal maintenance schedule. I think that the lack of oilers is just planned obsolescence by the factory.

I just purchased a 1984 John Deere 455d Track Loader with 4 in 1 buckett, backhoe mount but no backhoe. It sat for about 10 years I was told. The clutch pedal, when stepped on, would stick to the floor. The seller said it neede the engine to be slid forward and a new clutch spring installed. I purch...

Acceptable smoke..........

My 1984 John Deere 455D Turbo Track Loader runs like new. It has around 7400 hours on it. I put the key in the ignition and just touch the start button and it starts right up. When it starts up it lets out a decent size puff of white smoke, then no more smoke thru idle. If I go from idle quickly to ...

That totally makes sense now that you explained it and I understand it. I just earlier today checked the trany and it's about 1/4" to 3/8" above the high mark on the dipstick. I'm going to run it for awhile and check it again. If it's still above, I'll just draw some out of the trany fill and check ...

77 Ford..........That's the exact same port arrangement I have. The adjuster hole is 3/4" drive and the oil fill hole is 1/2" drive. I thought that was the use for each hole. The operators manual is extremely vague as to which is which. The manual calls for 7 gallons in each side. The oil fill accep...

77 Ford Thanks for the info. Is there anyway you can post a picture of the steering clutch housing fill and adjusting ports....... I also have 2 ports. The steering clutch adjusting port is about 3 inches higher than the other port. Maybe I'm filling the wrong port...........They both open into the ...

Another thing, on the right side of the steering clutch housing there's another plug in a small trough almost horizontal which takes a 1/2" breaker bar to remove. It's to the left of the vertical fill plug which takes a 3/4" breaker bar to remove. Before I fluid filled it, I looked in the hole and s...

Everything is now as it should be except one item. On the side of the steering clutch housing, the operators manual points to the fill plug, which is also the steering brake adjusting plug, ( same for both sides ) and says to add 7 gallons of fluid. When I put in the 7 gallons of Hy-Gard, the fluid ...

Well, I need the dozer to be up and running so I made a decision this AM that I would purchase new fluids for the transmission, steering clutches and the final drives today. So, I went to the local John Deere dealer and per his recommendation bought John Deere Hy-Gard. I needed a total of 25.25 gall...

OK...........Then based on the previous replies to my initial question, I must ask again:
For my 1984 John Deere 455D it reads in my owners manual to use 15W40 in the engine, transmission, hydraulic system and both steering clutches.
What do you recommend to use? Thanks, Frank
