Re: JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
I never had plans to save it. Especially after seeing it with the piston out. It is actually worse on the opposite side from the picture. So I made a puller that I am trying to post a picture of. Paint won't let me save the resized pic. I used a 3/4 or so thick bar and used two coil spring compresso...

Re: JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
I will try that Jim. Thank you. I did try about 5 good whacks with a big snap on slide hammer 3 jaw puller. I decided to quit so I did not damage the OD of the sleeve. I see the liner puller in the manual. I will try the sledge on top idea, and then probably see about building a puller to try and ap...

Re: JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
Thank you for that. The seller said it was a 78. Pretty hard to purchase a 78 in early 76. So what is the secret for removing a stuck liner? I definately need and in frame rebuild. The liner looks pretty bad with coolant etching and scoring from running it with the corrosion that was creat...

Re: JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
Interesting stuff developing here regarding all this this morning. My next work project has been canceled. The owner has developed cancer and his life priorities have changed. Restoring an old jeep is not in his cards. Disturbing news. I spent more time awake last night than asleep. I too pondered h...

Re: JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
I had a heavy equipment mechanic friend come by today to borrow my log splitter. We took a long look at the engine. I showed him everything I had found. He thinks the block is damaged and the packing land or ridge? is broken for it to be so low. The opposite side of the liner is high. So it is defin...

JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
I have not been on here in a while. I finally got caught up on a project and got it to it's owner. One of the things waiting for my attention is my 1978 JD450C with turbo. I am about to do a third head gasket and I am looking closely to try and not have to do this again. I have found a liner low on ...

Compression testing
Happy new year all. Working on a 1978 450C w/ turbo. And a 1969 JD 400 backhoe. I was going to ask about a part # for the correct adapter for compression testing. I believe I have finally found the correct one. http://www.autotoolworld.com/Mityvac-MVA5619-Diesel-Injector-Adapter-JI-Case-Caterpillar-...

Fantastic that you found a good solution for new instrumentation. The Stewart Warner Deluxe series have always been a favorite and go in most all my car or jeep restorations. Only recently did I open a SW gauge and found the gauge face was crimped out of position and could not be mounted straight in...

Grab a flashlight and remove the seat and covers and give the shifter some movement. I did this yesterday on my 450C as I am getting ready for some adjustments and was surprised at how sloppy the linkages were. I have clevis pins wore half way through and the lock nut under the clevis for the shifte...

I just received a thermostat from John Deere and got it in yesterday. Drove it today and it is great. Solid at 180. I tested the old 180 thermostat in a pan with a temp gun. It did not start to open till it hit 205 and was slow to open. It was fully open at 213 or a boil. Hmmm. I shut the motor down...

Odd, it appears after noticing my engine was running hot that my thermostat is stuck. This is right after my work I completed. Wondering if I had an air bubble below the thermostat from a complete coolant exchange. I shut it off and sure enough, the cast elbow is really hot all the way to the thermo...

Well I got it. But not without making me work for it. That plug has been in the cast elbow for 47 years and did not want to come out. I used a 18 inch 1/2 inch drive breaker bar with a reducer to 3/8 drive hooked to a socket driven 3/8 allen. Right when I felt it start to turn it broke the allen. Lu...

Tank heater will work a lot better if you plumb the top hose into a tee at the temp sending unit. Lavoy Up at the elbow that goes into the cylinder head is a large allen socket pipe plug. I wanted to hook up there. The ports would be almost the length of the engine apart. But I just could not get i...
