Re: 440 "power plant"
Oh yes, I took the reverser housing off to I could use the shaft to try and turn the engine to no avail. But at least it provides me some form of 'PTO' output. If anyone has ideas on what to do for a bearing on the rear end of the bellhousing pls let me know. I could have my machinist friend turn do...

Re: 440 "power plant"
I see no such clamp and holder but that does not mean it was not there in its past. Went to crank it over and the engine is 'frozen'. Not sure what the problem is exactly yet. Started to remove the head for an inspection and once I had the exhaust manifold off I could see a bit of ice inside the hea...

Re: 440 "power plant"
Engine was delivered this am but did not have any time to work on it during the day. The people I bought it from were very nice though there were some language difficulties. The wife said the hubby was a heavy engine mechanic and was working when he parted it out just fine. But to change all fluids ...

Re: 440 "power plant"
Good to know about the Deere specific flywheel housing. For now the plan is just to run a pump off the front. If it turns out the motor is not a boat anchor I can shop around for an SAE flywheel housing for its evolution.

Re: 440 "power plant"
Am in Ontario.
Plan was to use the existing hydraulic pump or get a replacement. Then use the PTO for something else like an large air compressor or water pump.

440 "power plant"
Hi gang, My 40 C is running like a top and may actually consider painting it all up next summer.....crazy talk. Have been looking for some type of engine to run a 20 GPM+ hydraulic pump for my log splitter. Right now it is being driven by my B414 with a PTO pump but I need that back for the snow blo...

Thx for all of the tidbits everyone. It is all back together and steering nicely now. One brake band can use a bit more tweaking but for now will suffice. I took the carb to a fellow with an ultrasonic cleaner last nite and put it back together this am and is runs nice too. an ultrasonic cleaner is ...

Took it all apart again. Raised the fingers are beyond the gauge. Seems to be better now but not perfect. If I have the ambition I will try to raise them another 1/8" just to see. I try to limit my annual spend on this 'hobby' otherwise I would just go get a new clutch disc and pressure plate. Just ...

Tore it all apart today. Throwout bearing is fine. Pilot bearing is fine. Has to adjust the clutch fingers as they were high, but I would have expected low. At least they were all high at the same level. Clutch disc is in good shape. The plates has a slight oxidation to them in the pattern of the cl...

Wow maybe I should be ashamed but I finally found a local to me donor tranny at a reasonable price. Got it all back together with some new bearings and it is running smooth! Talk about a long term project and the neighbors were wondering if it would ever run again. I find now that the gears grind wh...

Well that was depressing. I spent the weekend finally tearing apart my crawler to replace the chipped gears. Imagine the surprise when I opened up the back of the tranny to see the ring and pinion shredded. *sigh* What can you do? At least it was easy enough to get all apart. The manual says the rin...

How is that for procrastination! Finally got around to getting at this. Took the engine out, then the bellhousing assembly and the bearing or what was left of it was easy to remove. Looks like there was no cotter pin in the nut and the nut eventually loosened allowing the bearing to play. The bearin...

Could not find my CDROM manual for the life of me and realized I copied the PDF file to a backup hard drive thankfully. Since it is the front bearing on the output shaft that is toast....I plan to take the engine out, then the clutch housing and change the bearing with the back ass still intact. Hav...

Jim, Thx for the input. Ironically I am one of those guys who waits for the gears to stop during a shift! Though as you say popping the shift cover would be quick to see what is in there. I do not recall what gear it is popping out of but can find out pretty quick once I take it for a little spin. K,
