40C popping out of gear

Hi gang, Hope all is well. Late last fall my crawler started to pop out of gear and with winter approaching I parked it not wanting to spend any effort on it till spring. Well hopefully another week will bring warmer temps and I wanted to address the issue. Not sure what to consider on it other then...

Lessons of a brake band....

Well it had been a year or two ago I replaced one of the brake bands in my 40C. Every month I had to adjust it so it would stop that side. Being a crawler newb I did not know better. Finally I tore it apart and the wear pattern on the pad was horrible. I guess when I stuck the final back on, it push...

stuck in the muck!

I should have taken a photo but was too ashamed to admit my defeat :) Used my little 40C to fill in a small pond full of water. Local township was dumping ditch material and I was pushing it in. Was a boggy mess but the little 40C floated on the mass without issue. About 4/5 the way through I could ...

crank that baby with a 12V battery in it and if there is any will in it, it should at least fire a few times. I had put a new 6V battery in mine even though it was still 6V and it was just too weak to get it going consistently. Now if it fires you should change it over to a 12V coil or you will burn...

Randy, Ya what you say makes sense. I just wish there was an easier way since I do not have a lathe. I may order oversize bushings and just bite the bullet and take them into my local machine shop. There are a few things I want turned for the homestead and they appreciate cash business. Here is wher...

40C blade 'slop'

Hi gang, As more things are getting fixed on my 40C one of the things I am pondering is working up some bushings for the various spots in the frame for the blade. When I lift or lower there is so much play in the linkage points I need to add bushings to tighten it up. The idea solution is to take th...

I ended up taking 2 1" diameter steel rods about 14" long, 16" may be good too. At each end I drilled a 1/2" hole and they are lined up in the same plane. I insert each rod through the next track link to the removable pin of the track. Now in each of these 1" rods I place a 36" long, 3/8" diameter t...

Part of the frame for the blade where it attaches to the body was not the most efficient attachment so I made some U type bolts for it. Used to be that if I moved the blade down, it would loosen and now I can blade down and lift the front of the tracks off the ground. Anyways took it through the yar...

interesting suggestion and although I have not looked I am sure it is still there as I used the choke to start it when I realized I was out of gas ;)

it sure runs fine now and I have yet to really push it but think there is much more power in it.

well my new rod bearings arrived today. as I was installing them I rotated the crank for easier access to put the nuts on. decided it would be easier to rotate the crank with the plugs out and hence removed them. One plug was totally messed up and I never changed them since buying them. There was al...

Turns out after a search on the Federal Mogul catalogue they have 2 options for the 40:

2205cp 2.249"
2210sb 2.498"

those being from early and late models. I guess I will order the right ones now.....

40c rod bearings

Hey gang, My bearing journals are in good shape but the engine developed a significant knock last week. I thought I would try the easy approach first before a complete tear down and just replace my rod bearings. Clevite number on them is no longer valid and the Clevite catalogue for the 40 had beari...

Got my seal from the local JD dealer and all put together and installed yesterday. Since I do not have factory HD lines it is a mishmash of custom made hose and man it is tight for space for those lines the way the intake and exit run up instead of to the side. Anyways all runs well and am pleased w...

As always....thanks Lavoy!

Found the parts manual on the JD website. Sure enough it has the seal and explains the few subtle difference. Looks pretty much the same otherwise.
