I must admit I was shocked at the price of the starter. I figured $250 or so, but this shop has a turn around time of 1-3 days, charges a flat labor rate of $60, then any parts it will need. Well I know how that goes; they suck you in with cheap labor and then put on parts it does not need, but that...

That is awesome...and yes a small world! I did not work directly with a Pete, but rather a Tom, BJ, and Al (an older gentleman). I have been meaning to follow up on Facebook with some of those guys. We often get so geared up in the work that needs to be done that we forget camp is just as much about...

In retrospect, I guess things were not so bad, $93 to rebuild the starter. $60 dollars for labor and a new solenoid.

Now just to put it all back on!

Starters

In the old days, crawlers were hand cranked and after today I am not so sure its not a bad idea to go back to them; being run-over by a bulldozer and broken wrists be that as it may. First of all, it took me 1-1/2 hours to dismantle every possible piece of auxiliary equipment practically mounted to ...

80 Cords of Firewood: 2-1/2 days

Yep, no joke. It is an annual event, cutting, splitting, hauling and stacking 80 cord of firewood for a Christian Camp I volunteer for. A lot of the guys are from PA who come up every year to help out. It is a lot of work, but its nice to make new friends too. A lot of people helped out, but 80 cord...

Thanks for your reply, and I did as you said and choked up on my chokers and it helped a little, but still snapped a few of them. The end all, be all I guess is to get the wood up off the ground. I was only going with 4 or 5 stems, most in the 1 foot range for pulp, and for hardwood logs, nothing ov...

Retired!

In all the excitement of getting out in the woods with the ole 350D, I forgot to mention that as of Monday at 7AM I officially retired from the shipyard. It was fun at times, always interesting and loved the guys and gals I worked with, but its hard to farm and build ships too. I guess if anything, ...

Pop goes the weasel...

Now that I am officially retired and have got my first week of retirement in, I have had a chance to really see what the 350D will do in its intended purpose on my farm; and that is, pull wood from the forest. It's been a LONG time since I cut wood with a dozer and its taking some getting used to ov...

Hydraulic Track Adjuster Ball Size

Anyone know the size of the Hydraulic Track Adjuster Ball so I can get a new one on a 1988 John Deere 350D? There is no size on the John Deere Parts Site. I think that is the issue anyway. new seals on the hydraulic adjuster, new grease zerk, pushes the idler out fine, is being properly bled...but a...

Interesting Stan. I wonder if the fittings I replaced; button style, were for an oil gun? I just assumed they were old school and threaded in new grease zerks. I am not sure where I can find an oil gun, or low pressure/high volume grease gun, but I'll look around. I really do care. PondHogVT could t...

Dumb question in the interest of roller grease... My 1988 350D did not have grease fittings for the original front idler bushings, but the used ones I found did. I put them in and pumped them full of grease, but only until I felt resistance...I am not so dumb as to blow those grease seals out with m...

Interesting thread! The steering on my dozer is fine, but it does steer better one way then the other. An old duffer by me (87 years old) loves dozers nd claims he can adjust the clutches well enough and has offered to help, but I was not so sure and have not let him do so yet. I am not sure how muc...

Welder by trade... If you know of a large metal fabrication shop you might be able to get the quality control guy to come out and test the hardness of the steel. It is done by using a sort of hydraulic press onto the steel and measuring the indentation it makes. The harder the steel, the less of an ...

I am not sure I would break in an engine with synthetic oil. I did on my snowmobile since it came with Mobil 1 (4 stroke Yamaha), but it took 750 miles to do it! I would go with regular oil first, then switch to a full synthetic after the break in period was over. That is what I would do if it was m...

Last time I built a cradle out of 2 X 6's and used a lining bar to pound out the pin. No profanity or beer, but it was reluctant to say the least. Unfortunately I will now have to repeat the procedure; my left side idler just broke today. Good thing I bought 2 for it in anticipation!
