Out of the blue, my 450C track loader started to run poorly. It started acting up after i was using it for 1/2 hour, it had been setting for 1-2 days. It returned to normal when I loosened the fuel cap to check the fuel level. I found one of those mud nests from a wasp under the fuel tank. Because y...

Does the Deere coolant have anti-cavitation additives? I have read quite a few good things about Napa's Be Cool anti cavitation additive. Bruce

X2 on what jtrichard said. Run a small semi rigid wire through the vent. It is the 1/8 pipe just under the fuel cap. It runs through the tank and exits the bottom of the tank. You can ask me how I know about this! Bruce

The rebuild that Stan has mentioned will likely eclipse the entire value of the machine. Finding a replacement engine would be a challenge, but probably more financially sound (assuming it is a good replacement). Good luck, Bruce

I recommend servicing the reverser and putting it back to use. I bought my first 420C when I was 16yo. I cut my teeth, so to speak on a gear driver reverser. I think they are much better than shifting into reverse. They are susceptible to wear and miss use. As with any machine of age, go slow, take ...

I'm not aware of a trans breather tube. I suspect the plastic tube you are describing in the sump drain for the fuel tank. I drain a cup of fuel out of the fuel sump to rid the tank of water and sediment every so often. Bruce

Yes, the pick-up screen is very fine wire mesh, about 3/4" in diameter about 2" long. It is in the most dependent part of the sump. The inspection cover is the bottom of the sump, held with 8 bolts, IIRC.

The internal splines can strip. It takes a very close look to see if the input shaft is spinning on the winch. The pick up screen plugs awful easy if the machine as not been run in awhile. Take care, Bruce

If the oil level isn't the problem, A stripped coupler on the winch drive will cause a sudden stop also.

The fill is a large barrel bung type plug on the top right. There is a plug on the right side of the winch, i believe the plug faces front to back. You remove this plug on the side, if fluid comes out it is full. If not, fill until it starts to run out. You may want to remove the inspection cover on...

I use "The Right Stuff" from NAPA made by Permatex. Skip the whole gasket, it will fill a gap up to .090". We use it on all the OTR trucks and Ag equipment. Differential covers etc. We haven't had any call-backs and we have been using it for several years. It does use a small chaulking gun. I strong...

Stan, you are correct regarding the up graded coil, as long as it is the internalresistance variety. Lots of the younger parts people will hand you a coil, thinking a coil is a coil. Take care, Bruce
