Thanks, Stan. There are a huge array of 12V LED lights available for reasonable cost, including round lights that would fit. Here's one to test your electrical knowledge - could I pull off the battery to a 6V - 12V converter and then put in a small 12V lawnmower battery to run the lights? Found this...

LED lights on a 6V system?

I tend to run my 40C a fair bit after dark during the winter. Mainly to to give the kids sleigh rides (not sure this year, it is still down right balmy here). I probably have more hours on the machine doing that than anything else, lol. Photo is of my buddy pulling the kids around last year. We use ...

I've always hated those snap binders. I don't haul a lot but when I do I use two snap binders and two ratchets. Tighten the snaps first so I don't have to reef on them and then use the ratchets with a short pipe to really snug the load. On my mini excavator I use heavy straps on the bucket and blade...

I'd get a guage and see how far off it is first. True machinists freak out about everything being perfect. I just use my lathe to make already worn out parts fit stuff. It's far from perfect but great for my needs. NASA has yet to come knocking at my door.

Wow, that was a great price for that Bridgeport assuming it was in decent shape. Maybe some day.

Lurch, is that yours?

Just out of curiosity, would there be a way to use a 12v battery but drop the voltage to 6v using a small transformer? I suppose a second transformer would be needed in the opposite direction to jump the voltage up from the charging system, and maybe it doesn't push enough amps. P=IV, right? The onl...

To kick this off.... I'm not an expert by any means, but I picked up a used South Bend Heavy 10 and rebuilt it. www.practicalmachinist.com is the JD Crawlers forum of machine tools. I knew nothing about lathes (still only know a little), and that board was invaluable during my rebuild. My lathe is v...

Learn something every day. I have had pretty good luck with Deka 12v batteries, we'll see how the 6v holds up. I have not had good luck with Interstate, and most certainly not Exide. I will never buy another battery from Tractor Supply again. They seem to last just long enough to not make it worth t...

I had a 6v Interstate in my 40c that lasted just long enough for the warranty to be over. I will not go that route again. I now have a Deka 6V that is two years old, so far so good. Started it several times in below zero temps this winter without issue. I believe Deka also makes a bunch of private l...

I agree with Lavoy. I've had a couple of those fairleads over the years, and have one now on my Samurai rockcrawler. They are fine for occasional use but not very rugged at all and would not live long in a logging environment.

Scottyb, not sure about others but I can't see your pictures. I have thought about trying to build an arch but I was concerned about the added stress to the winch mount. My tracks have snow pads with staggered ice caulks on them, which help a lot in the woods but are not so great for the lawn, grave...

Yup, I agree. With no fairlead and a heavy cable it is even worse in my case. I have to watch the cable pretty closely when the hitch starts to get close or it will bunch up and bind. After a few time of having to hitch the cable to a tree to get it to unspool I learned that a little more time to ma...

A little logging fun

Had a chance to get out and cut some wood last weekend. It was 5 below when I got started so things were slow to get moving. First had to plow the road out to my firewood yard, maybe 18" of snow: http://i481.photobucket.com/albums/rr178/hydrogeo/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/8D43F05A-D3F2-4497-BF08-50E8B...

In defense of JD, I do recall a contractor friend telling me once that "If it's not a CAT it's a dog".
