New add ons and goodies on JD 440 ICD
It is amazing what can be found out there. I located an NOS battery box (AT 11494 T). It still has the factory stamp on it. I like the battery on the fender for convenience, along with safety and fire prevention reasons, as mentioned in previous post by someone that suffered a fire from battery spar...

Laser tachometer
I would like to thank the poster (I forgot who it was) that recommended the laser tachometer. I used it today and it works great. It is the only way I found to set the RPM on a GM 2-53 since there is no way to connect a mechanical tach without modifications.

Howard,
I feel pretty good since it was my first crawler. I have heard some really bad stories from first time buyers of these.
It has the left and right turning levers. I read where most joy sticks were removed due to mechanical issues. I have never seen a joy stick on one.
Thanks for your comments.

1959 JD 440 ICD
I am still working on this one. It was in remarkably good condition when I got it. The U/C is really good and the tracks have been adjusted since this picture. I am in the process of making it as original as possible. No alternators, unless I change the gauges to digital! http://public.fotki.c...

The JD Operator's manual for the 440 ICD says the following about cold weather starting procedures: "Note: The engine will start easier if the engine speed control lever is placed in the one-half-speed position while starting at low ambient temperatures." "Do not spray ether into air cleaner intake ...

1959 JD 440 ICD
I am looking for a good serial number tag for a 1959 440 ICD. Most any serial number between 448001 & 453,872 should work. I prefer to have one that has not been sanded blasted.
I also need the later style governor cover.
Let me know what you have.

Battery box for a 440 with a loader
I would appreciate any information, pictures, or dimensions of the JD battery boxes that were bolted to the left fender of a 440 crawler. It was used especially when a 91 or 831 loader was attached due to not being able to access the battery under the hood with the loader in the down position. There...

Tim, Welcome to the best board on the Internet. Congrats on the nice looking 440IC. That looks to be a John Deere 602 angle blade on there. If you have not already purchased them, first order of business is to get your hands on the JD service and parts manuals for this crawler. The operator's manual...

Michael, Thanks for that info, I knew there had to be a way to get the RPM closer than guessing at it. As for the alternator idea, that is out the door for me. I am one of those that believes in having it as original as possible and practical. I like the advantages of an alternator, but I run genera...

JD 440 gauges
Where is the best place to buy original type gauges (oil pressure, ammeter, and water temp) for the 440?
It appears that the factory used an electric sending unit for the oil pressure. Are these still available like the original?

JD 440 ICD RPM
I am guessing at the idle speed of around 600 RPM. How do you measure the "fast idle" speed of around 1,975 RPM?
I cannot find where a tachometer was available for the GM 2-53, only an hour meter.
