Take a reading at the thermostat housing-where the coolant leaves the engine to go to the radiator.
That will be the engine temp. Clean the the dirt and oil off.
You can take a reading from the top and bottom tank on the radiator to get an idea how the radiator is working.

Awesome Always a good feeling when a engine goes from running bad to running good again.

The radiator cap needs to hold the correct pressure.
Test or replace-this is more important than most people Realize.

An angle head wrench will work also

The black is what is left of the dampener ring. The white is the new ring before installing

The problem isn’t the check valve. The check valve is being plugged by little pieces of the dampener ring inside the injection pump.
After many years the dampener ring starts to disintegrate and the pieces plug the check valve.
The dampener ring will have to be replaced.

If a starter is used with low voltage or high load it can overload the contacts in the cap and the disk on the plunger. I hauled this 1010 home in December, the engine is bad so it had to be pushed on the trailer. When I got it home I pulled it off with the bucket on a JD410 backhoe.
