Can anyone tell me what is that lever for on top of the tranny on a 440,just to the left of the shifter?

Just got a 440 with a 831 loader.Seems to run OK, but need some advice on that reverser.Seems to me that when you pull the handle up,that should be forward, but on mine,it feels like something is wrong,I see the spool moving by my left foot,but nothing is engaging.Now what is strange is that I have ...
