Re: 450C Leaking head or head gasket?

Did you check the protrusion of the new cylinder liners? If one is setting too high for some reason it might prevent the gasket from sealing properly. Did you have the head checked while it was off? Are the two alignment dowels in the block? Did you chase the threads of the head bolt holes in the bl...

Re: 1010 Crawler loader diesel engine oil recommendations

Your description of the heater is correct. 1000 to 1500 watt size would be plenty. I believe the current one of that type John Deere has for engines the size of yours is 1500 watts. Your parts book should show the engine heater option (that part number shows as No Longer Available) to give you an id...

Re: 1010 Crawler loader diesel engine oil recommendations

Welcome to the forum, I run 15W/40 year round in my machines. Years ago, when I worked on road construction equipment, we used to run 30 weight in the summer and change to 10 weight in the winter, that phased out fairly quickly as the multi-vis 15W/40 became common. The synthetic 15W-40 is a bit bet...

Re: 420 steering clutch

On your steering questions. Yes the cam action moves the throw out bearing to the pressure plate and there may be an issue there. There is an adjustment procedure for the rod between the lever and cam that would have been done at assembly. There is an adjustment to the throwout bearing itself to set...

Re: Looking at a 350 B

I don't know there is much you can check on the isolator besides operation. It is good if it is cold (not run prior to your arrival) and gets started after you get there. Check fluids for levels and condition before and after operation. Look for leaks. Wiggle a fan blade to check the water pump. Loo...

Re: Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?

I would say the undercarriage is worn more like 130%, or more, given the idler brackets look to be near the ends of the track frames and the tracks are loose. Grousers are well worn.

Re: MC generator belt

A-A21 and A-L4201T (4L230) were shown as an alternative part numbers on the JD parts site. Their Alternative parts are usually A&I from what I have found, since JD is part owner of A&I. 4L230 is a common belt. I gave you the Gates number for an automotive belt before.

Re: MC generator belt

I don't have a hands on answer but here is what I found from the books. The JD number for the MC generator belt from the parts catalog is L4201T (22.75" effective length, .554" width, .281" thickness, 42 degree angle). Gates crosses it to # 2230 or a "construction alternative" (heavier duty) # 6823....

Re: JD 550 Engine and Trasmission Rebuild

The parts drawing shows 2 different studs in that joint along with the capscrews. They look to be in the lower corners, similar to the location of the 3/4" capscrews at the top. The part numbers show up as NLA. I'm sure you have been around the flanges many time but since I can't see it, I will ask ...

Re: JD 550 Engine and Trasmission Rebuild

I haven't done one of these but I looked on line at the 550 convertor housing parts page. I think you are referring to the hole showing under item #10 which is a 3/4" capscrew, not 10 capscrews as I first read it. If so and they are 1/2" threaded holes in the convertor housing only, with no matching...

Re: jd555 winch

I haven't made the swap so no first hand knowledge, but according to the on line JD parts catalogs they both used the 3325 winch (you didn't say so I am assuming that is what is on the 555A). You can research further to see if any small parts are needed/different at: https://partsadvisor.deere.com/....

Re: Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?

Personally, I don't see working on either one as much easier than the other. Some of the 450 parts are a bit bigger and heavier, but not that much.

Turbo will give the same size engine a noticeable bit more at times as Stan noted. You would notice it when really pushing hard.

Re: Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?

I expect the parts issues will be about the same for either a 350 or 450 of similar series, as they run in the same vintage for the most part. Look in the FAQ section and you can see the serial numbers and years for the various series of each. The first straight 350s and 450s are 53 years old and th...
