Hi, Yes, the West side of Milan has a lot of gravel. One of my old fire dept. buddies used to run Rock City Sand & Gravel on the West edge of town. I lived on the East edge, right next door to Wilcox Park. No gravel over there, just a lot of shale! Veddy interesting about that skull. How neat is tha...

Hi, No. Not really. Just kidding! I had to, given the way you were looking for such a post! :P I used to live in Milan, though I used Red Hook because 80% of the folks living in Dutchess County have no clue where in heck Milan is! Your sig is interesting. You have a 440 with 420 decals, I take it. A...

Hi, Well, the screws ought to blow right through the engine, as they're small and it was wide-nuts open at the time. The butterfly plate is a bit more worrisome given it's size. I'd expect it to get stuck in the intake port for one of the cylinders. I think the intake is smaller than the butterfly. ...

Hi, When I was a kid, and the family still had that Deere dealership, we had a very good customer. He dug ponds. Used a JD450 most of the time. Actually, he used four of them. Two were on the job site, one was back at his shop and, usually, one was at our shop being cleaned out. His usual method was...

Hi, One farm I worked on as a teenager had a pair of 3010 crawlers that they used only to unstick tractors, combines and semi grain trucks when they got stuck. The farm was 15,000 acres of corn and raised Angus and was in the flatland between two ridges, so there was plenty of opportunity to get thi...

Hi, I used to have a 350 without power steering, and I can't honestly say that there was any difficulty in steering the thing. It's really not much different than steering the 420. I have no trouble when running a long day. Perhaps it matters if one is running long days each and every day. I never o...

Lavoy,

Just to educate me, is the 440 manual self-contained or does one need the stack of older manuals like one does with the ag machines?

Also, if it's self-contained, is the number you posted just for crawlers, or are the various wheel 440s in there as well?

Hi, If it's the gas engine, then it's pretty much the same as on the 420 and 430 series wheel tractors. The diesel was only used in the 440 series and the 435 ag wheel tractor. I don't know about the 440 service manual. It may be that since the 440 was specific for the industrial market, they put ev...

Hi, Well, yes, you'll have to open the poor thing up and look-see. I don't know, if this is the case, if the job is doable in-frame or not. I do know that I'd want the whole engine, in pieces, on the bench so I could eyeball everything, and measure most things, before I proceeded. I'd probably go th...

Hi, Pull the machine out backwards, drawbar to drawbar. Then, you can let the loader bucket just drag if you can't get it chained up. You can use another crawler, even a smaller one, as tracks roll pretty darned well. I don't know if you'd have any luck with a wheel tractor unless it were a lot larg...

Hi, Well, if working the master clutch has an effect, I suppose it must be related to the clutch. However, you're right. It would seem that if it were a slipping master clutch, then it surely would not push. In my experience this is not what happens, either to a worn clutch or one getting oil onto i...

It's odd how this hobby goes

Hi, There was once a time when I was all hot for a 420w/430w, and now I'm going to sell it. We've always had the 420c, and one day I got this idea that I wanted a matching wheel tractor: Phase-III, 5-speed trans, live PTO, etc. So, I found myself a '58 420w that needed some work. A lot of work, actu...
