Rusty and dusty 40-C

I got my 420 in 3 pieces, engine final drive and frame and it took me about 3 years and several dollars to fix it. I've never regretted it and love to fool around on it and if I run out of something to do I'll just take something apart to look at to see how its doing. Jump in and get your feet wet a...

A lathe needs to be level within .0002" front to back and side to side. A lot of older lathes have a dip in the ways from sanding and not cleaning which causes them to cut a taper. The tail stock needs to be centered, if it isn't it will cut a taper when using a center and it will break tools such a...

What is best for pushin snow

I own a 420 JD w/#62 blade, a 50hp bobcat and a 82hp Kubota front end loader, a parking lot about 100ft x 200ft. Which would be best for pushing snow? I never had to push much snow.

JD 420 cleats

I used grade 8 fine thread bolts and I torqued them properly however the holes in the pads, cleats or whatever were worn larger than stock specs. By cleats or pad I mean the part that comes in contact with the ground to harness the power of the crawler. So with the holes being to large the pads work...

420 JD cleats

I purchased a used set of rails a few years ago and the cleats were worn down so I had good cleats so I changed them. I didn't realize the holes in the cleats were important and the bolts need constantly tighten. Can I weld the cleat to the rail or is the metal used on rails and cleats high carbon s...

sticking clutches

I own a 1977 IH 140, cultivating tractor, and the clutch sticks after setting a while. The clutch is the same mechanical concept as the JD 420C engine tranny clutch is there anything I can do to prevent this? I bought the tractor new in 1977 and its been well maintained and I don't know why all of a...

I lay down a 4x4 wood drive on it until dozer rocks forward, then I put a block that is precut under the drawbaw(fits tight), then I activate the blade down and the dozer raises it self, then I put jackstands under square pieses that tracks are hooked to. Then you're ready to have fun.

420 ignition system

I installed a GM one wire alternator on my 420C. I converted it over to 12VDC negative ground. I also changed the igniton system to solid state. I got the kit from denny's carb shop and it included solid state breaker, magnet to go on distributor cam, thunder bolt coil, ballast resitor and wires, I ...
