Re: Steering clutch tie rod adjustment

The steering lever resting on its stop should be just beginning to put pressure on the balls to push the throwout bearing out. You want the bearing to retract fully, but no slop or backwards travel.

Re: New to crawlers and have some questions!

If you get a reproduction parts manual off ebay it will show the correct sizes of all the bolts.

Re: 1958 420 Battery

Are you sure the clutch is adjusted correctly? I have no such interference between the pedal and the tray. I have a 1957 (Phase II) model though.

I also charge the battery via the hot stud on the starter.

Carb gas strainer

Is the strainer on a 420 carb supposed to be open on the end of the screen or do I need to solder mine shut? The fuel line currently has an inline filter but I need to get rid of it because it doesn't allow the gas to flow, need to make sure the strainer is going to work.

Re: About those 420 hydraulic cylinders...

Agreed, there is a big difference between sealing at 900 psi vs. 2500+. You should be fine if things are reasonably smooth. If the dents and scratches are deep enough to leak oil you could try filling with JB Weld after drying with brake cleaner. The important thing is that there are no edges on the...

Re: Icy Hydraulics

John Deere's instructions were to drain the tank every spring and fall, refill with kerosene and run the engine to flush the pump and valve body (don't use any levers), then drain and refill with clean oil. I ignored them because it seemed like a waste of oil and the drain plug is hard to reach. Aft...

Re: Heating Your Home

That is crazy what you've done with the log loader trailer. I want one of those myself, if only money grew on trees. My heat is a propane boiler and I love it even though I'm a big firewood guy. It's cheap, almost no maintenance, heats the house evenly, I don't have to be home to refuel the thing. I...

Re: Just wanted a new flip phone....

Yes, I remember the millions of unsold phones, $4 million Super Bowl commercial that no one understood, the people that waited a year for a keyboard phone with the new OS only to be brushed aside because it was seen as old tech. Funny how the guys higher up manage to take a good product and send it ...

Re: Just wanted a new flip phone....

That's great that you still use a BlackBerry. I never see them anymore. It was very disappointing that they couldn't continue development of BB10 because it seemed a much less frustrating experience than trying to do things on the other guys' phones (as long as you didn't need an app!).

Re: 420 steering clutch

I think I found that someone had put smaller balls in there, resulting in the pop from overtravel. It could also be the clutch fingers are adjusted too far in, requiring you to move the bearing too far out.

Re: Just wanted a new flip phone....

Back in 2010, I was with BlackBerry. Lots of ex-Ericsson folks went there in 2009. Anyway, BB was a Smartphone only outfit. But, we wanted to appeal to the flipphone users. The bosses gave the job to the Ericsson folks as we made more flipphone models than anyone. So, we made a great one. A tad ove...

Re: Ignition / distrubutor problems??

Over the years I've read a lot of good thoughts on this site. Taking these ideas into account, and as time and money allowed, I've replaced the wiring harness with a new one - complete with soldered and shrink wrapped connections. Then I either replaced or rebuilt the entire electrical system on my ...

Re: 40C vs 420C hyd pump

As I explained with math previously, if you retract a cylinder, the rod goes into the cylinder. fluid gets displaced. Where does the oil go? It can't just go from the base side to the rod side since the is less volume on the rod side. Thanks there is on the base side. With a bulldozer blade, the ro...
