Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

Lavoy, Thanks. I stopped by a local machine shop this morning to see what it would cost to make one. Sounds like in the $25 to $30 range, unless I want a dozen or so made (but I did not ask the cost for that). I still look at it and think I could probably do it. I do not have a torch to heat up the ...

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

Stan, Thanks. On the left fender of my crawler there are two holes to the rear that are not used for the carriage bolts holding the fender on. The rear hole is 3/8" and the one a few inches in front of it is "7/16". Now the studs/brackets on my front light are L shaped and welded on the light guard ...

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

Does the rear light mount in the far rear hole on the left fender (3/8") or in the front the hole a few inches in front of it (7/16") hole? Thanks

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

To add to the thread, there is an "L" shaped bracket that is used to mount the light on the left rear fender. Anybody know the dimensions of the bracket. Lavoy tells me it is pretty pricy. I found a hole that a 7/16" bolt goes through. I figure I could heat up a bolt and bend it in an "L" shape and ...

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

And just when I think I have it figured out (thanks to the help here), the mystery deepens. The base of the light is .5 and there is no available hole to the rear of the left fender for which the base of the light will fit through. In checking with my parts books, there is an L shaped piece (21: M 1...

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

Lavoy and Stan, To probably add to the changes, the now identified tail light has a sealed beam. My guess that was done later and what I am seeing as a lose wire in the casing was the wire for the red light. I need to check and see if seal beam does work. If it does, I probably will not modify it ba...

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

Lavoy, Yes, you are right. The back of the housing is rounded rather than tear dropped shape. So it is a rear light someone put on the grill. This leads to a couple more questions. What does a new grill light cost? And, I see from some pictures that the rear light is mounted on the left fender. Othe...

Re: 420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

This is for the front light. On this crawler the front lights are mounted on the top of the grill guard. It is a series III 420C. My guess is that it was originally an industrial yellow and then painted agricultural green. It has the grill guard, full belly pan, front bumper, reverser, industrial ye...

420C Seal Beam Light Wiring

I am working on my 420C. One light is missing and when I opened up the other to clean out the rust and dirt from the inside, I saw that it was a seal beam light. Now there are two wires going into the light housing but only one is connected. It fits under a screw that tightens up. I do not see where...

Lavoy, Thanks for the information. As you may recall, about ten years ago you redid the pins for the tracks for this one. Larry

Re: Color of 420C blade

Stan, Thanks. I kind of wonder if some parts did not get repainted from yellow to green along the way too...and maybe an entire crawler. Kind of reminds of when I toured the IH-Case Doncaster, England Plant almost 20 years ago (now closed). They had painted a tractor plaid because some Council (I th...

Re: Color of 420C blade

Lavoy, I had forgotten that I did get the history from the crawler from John Deere (February 12, 2004...so it has been awhile). There is no indication of a blade on the crawler under "Special Equipment." Therefore, it may well have left the factory without a blade but one was put on later, perhaps b...

Re: Color of 420C blade

Lavoy, Thanks. However, a few observations. This crawler has been in the family ever since my grandfather purchased it new in 1958. It replaced an MC he purchased in 1949 after the infamous '49 blizzard in the area when isolated ranches were cut off from the rest of the world for weeks. The crawler ...

Color of 420C blade

What was the original color of the blade on a 1958 420C. The remaining yellow on my crawler's hood and grill looks like a brighter yellow than the yellow on the blade looks like a darker yellow. Were the blades painted the construction yellow and the crawler grill and hood had more the agriculture t...
