John Deere 420 C 1958 dash color

I have a 1958 John Deere 420C. Serial number is 133412, which I believe makes it a series 3. What should be the dash color?

Stud fastener for 420C

Does anyone know of a source for the stud fastener (#315T for the hood of a 420C. I need a couple, and I checked with the local John Deere dealer today and they are more than $20 a piece.

Thanks

Re: John Deere 420 C

I got it loose enough to get the crawler going again. I took it out and ran it for 30 minutes or so working the handles. I am pretty sure now that it is a matter of the clutch and brake sticking together and the brake does not letting the clutch engage. It is interesting, I can engage the clutch, pu...

Re: John Deere 420 C

Thanks to Stan and Bruce. Now if I could just convince my wife that working the pedals on the crawler is good exercise for her. That may be harder to do that getting the pedals to work right. Thanks for the helps fellows.

Re: John Deere 420 C

I have gotten the clutch and brake pedals to work separately...sort of. They are still really tight. The only way I can get them to work separately is block one and pushing the other with my leg. I probably did that 30 or 40 times and did not seem to get a looser. Is there any adjustment on the shaf...

Re: John Deere 420 C

Lavoy, The clutch only interferes with the battery when I go to slide the battery out so I can put a charger on it. I got the crawler from my uncle in about 2003. It was in pieces more or less and he passed on in 2007. For some reason there was a 2x6 block of wood down by the brake pedal and a wire ...

Re: John Deere 420 C

I assume there is a grease zerk down there somewhere. I end up crawling around under the crawler (pun intended) about every time I start it since I have to take off the clutch pedal to slide out the battery and put a charger on it. This time I was pleasantly surprised when it started right off. But ...

Re: John Deere 420 C

I would not think something would break with the crawler just sitting. However something might rust and stick together. I will try Lavoy's suggestion that the brake and clutch are rusted together and the brake is keeping the clutch from coming back and engaging. I may not get it checked until late t...

Re: John Deere 420 C

Thanks. It is sitting inside but maybe I can pull it with another tractor. What seems odd to me is if the clutch is stuck engaged, how I am able to put into gear while the crawler is running. I put some penetrating fluid on the brake/clutch shaft. It seems to have broke loose but not real loose yet....

John Deere 420 C

I have not started by John Deere 420C for about a year. I just went out and started it. To my surprise it started right off. However, when I went to move it, the clutch would not engage. I could put it in gear, have the reverse pushed forward, release the clutch, and nothing. I worked the clutch a l...

Re: decals

Thanks, I am tempted to take the sheet metal off and have it professionally painted, including the yellow strip. Then I would do or not do the cast and under carriage. It is a working crawler (well occasionally) and I assume the paint would soon be off the tracks and blade. The downside (and maybe t...
