If pondhog can't point you in the right direction, the source I'd be looking to is loggers. Where I live loggers in the 60s & 70s used small JD crawlers by the dozens. National forest was where the profits could be made, and USFS rules limited crawler size. One logger bought ten identical 350 size t...

So noted, and appreciated. I'm likely being OCD about it. Thanks.

Thanks Stan, I'm still on the fence about turning. Track chains show little wear. We'll put it back to running condition in a few days, and tighten the chains enough to get an accurate measurement. I think I'm going to find about 1/2" elongation in 9 pins. Maybe if they are worth turning, now would ...

As some of you know I am a traitor. I ended up with a Dresser TD7G, more money than the 450B, but less expense. We've been going through it, cleaning, replacing mismatched batteries, cables, switch, oils, filters, coolant, hydraulic hoses, etc. I'm amazed how costly these seemingly small items are. ...

My engine rebuilder died. I've heard a young guy who worked for him took over. He was Edger Engines route 4A Castleton VT. Depending on crank and cam condition you can pretty much rebuild without much tooling or skill. I have done IH wet sleeve engines. If your crank is out of spec, you'll need an e...

I've had 17 Jeeps. Mostly CJ series My first I still have, a 1947 CJ2A. Drove a 65 CJ5 to school my last year of high school. Now if I look out the window, I see a 99 Wrangler, and a Grand Cherokee the Mrs. loves.

Thank you. Your avatar comes from the greatest piece of American literature; Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, by Virginia Lee Burton It is well chosen. That along with Katie And the Big Snow are the two greatest works ever.

I wish the same for you and your loved ones.

[quote="oldmetalmender"]I have used a salamander heater on my big military truck one year to warm it up. I don't drive it at all in the winter as the NDT tires just have no traction. That certainly is an option for auxiliary heat. So I just ordered two "Proheat" 250 watt silicone stick on heaters. O...

In the case of John Deere backhoe valve, there are no O rings. The bore, and spool are so closely matched in size it is a fit so tight that no seal is needed. In mine, the bore was too big. 30 years later the valve part numbers had been superseded. Replacing three sections of a six section valve was...

There are numerous types of engine heaters. coolant heaters are manufactured in many wattages. A 300 watt heater will keep your engine warm enough to start if left plugged in. A 1300 watt heater will warm it to start in an hour or two. Along with a coolant heater, I suggest an oil pan heater. This w...

The concept of there being a lot of tension on the chain in reverse having to pull it around the front idler certainly makes sense. As there is nothing to hold the bushing deep in the gullet I get the notion of it riding up to the tooth where it strains on the tip where it is weakest, and there is l...

Sprocket replacement

As undercarriage wears, the gullets in the sprocket wear deeper, this reduces the diameter, and circumference of the sprocket. The sprocket distance between pins gets smaller. Meanwhile, the chain wears, and the distance between pins grows. Moving forward, all the strain on the track is concentratin...

Not a crawler, but I have a Power Wagon, Cylinder 1 & 2 and cylinder 5 & 6 are so close together that a sloppy distributor rotor blows a head gasket. Good distributor parts together with a copper colored sealant recommended by my now deceased engine builder solved a huge problem. I'll figure out wha...

Turning pins and bushings

I've heard the term, know nothing of it. Is it feasible, or something that would require a great deal of equipment?
