Re: 6 volt starter problem
Glad you were able to fix your starter. I've had to take apart my switch twice over the years. As you found, the copper contacts will gall and/ or misalign. That switch was probably my first repair on my machine, and one of the least expensive . Best wishes. Paul

Have you played with the load jet? I'll second Lavoy's thoughts too. There are some pretty small ports in the center tube that plug easily. Good luck. Paul

I realize that I'm late to the party, but maybe this will be helpful in the future.

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch - includes pictures
I replaced the clutch fluid lines with new stainless steel and brass fittings, using Permatex thread sealant. http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq324/pbuhler/60-20180808_160544_zpscclecsei.jpg I tried the hacksaw spacer method to adjust the clutch, but found that my clutch is eccentric, as compared...

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch - includes pictures
Hi: Finally got my winch back together. Rebuilt the controller. It needed a new o-ring and brake cup - 1-1/8" available at Napa. I honed the bores with a brake cylinder hone and used brake fluid as a lubricant. I used self- made paper gaskets glued one side with Permatex gasket shellac, and soaked t...

Re: Getting a 2 cylinder to burn cleaner?
When I first brought home my "dead" dozer, I found that the air cleaner was fully plugged with goo. The previous owner had not cleaned it in years. Once cleaned, the previously "choked" engine belched chunks of carbon for a few days before running better. Smelled better too. An easy check and if nee...

Re: 8a gearmatic winch drum removal
I agree with Tom: I made up a puller something like the arms on the split puller using allthread to help get the drum off the axle - didn't need it since one of the bearings was loose on the axle, and the inboard one was loose in its housing. https://www.eastwood.com/fairmount-tools-12-piece-bearing...

Re: 8a gearmatic winch drum removal
Tom: I'm in the process of digging deeper into my winch, like you did. Your pictures and comments helped a lot. I'll be posting pictures as well on my thread. I have everything re-assembled, but couldn't get the brake to bleed/work correctly, so after some head scratching, I dug into my controller a...

Re: Freezers!
Fun topic. Been there too. We defrost ours in the winter. Put the good stuff outside and then use whatever works to melt the freezer's ice into a puddle. Bears hibernate in the winter, so no lost goods to them. Freezer burn on the other hand means 1: too much stuff put up that we're not eating fast ...

Re: As Seen On TV (online, actually)
More of us have "pedals" than we like to admit; step on the clutch, and the brake goes 'round too.You folks with your fancy drive motor crawlers. My dozer just has bicycle crank pedals but I'm happy to have it!

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch
Searched " gearmatic 8a" and found a lot of our discussions as many of us worked on these winches in the past. Many of the tactics I used to dig deeper were from recollections of the various posts. I try to share part numbers when I can since it saves time. Other people on this site have been very g...

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch
Thanks for the info and thoughts. Andrew, I like the coffee pot heater idea; I've used other ways to preheat bearings, but this one is easy and doesn't require a lot of energy, and doesn't over heat the bearing. I happen to have an old electric hotplate that works well too when I put a piece of meta...

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch
Winch parts are all cleaned up and oiled where appropriate, and oil- free where appropriate. Waiting to re assemble when bearings arrive. Any thoughts on what I should do to replace the missing felt in the spider assembly? I'm thinking to just pack in some really stiff grease to keep things sliding ...

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch
Yes. When I broke down my drum, it appears that I need a lock ring on the outboard bearing, and don't on the inboard bearing. Any thoughts Tom? Thanks. Paul
update: used two "lock-ring bearings as the manual indicated.
