Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

That is partly the nature of 6 volt how ever I am curious how old is your starter? There is always that chance of it needing rebuilt. I don't know. It is possible it is original (1958). How difficult is it to take off? There is a good starter place nearby and I could take it off and have them check...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Check the carb and the points to make sure it's got fuel and strong spark. Sounds like you had a bad connection on the starter. My 40c is the best starting vehicle in my fleet. It can be zero out and even after sitting for weeks it will barely spin over twice before it fires and runs. As I said in ...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

It was rebuilt about 15 years ago and it has always seemed to be hard starting. It never spuns over the engine very fast. It is pretty cold out today, and it is in the unheated part of my shop, so I probably will not work on it today. Thanks

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

I know it has spark because it turned over a bit with the starter fluid. May not be getting gas. Main issue is melting of the starter wire. At least that is what troubles me most. Thanks

Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

I might know the answer to this but perhaps not. I went to start my 420 crawler yesterday. I just put in a new six volt Optima battery. I had put in an Optima from another tractor and started the crawler about a week ago. I got a new Optima and put it in the crawler and put the old one back in the o...

Re: Tach not Work on 420 Crawler

Lavoy, Thanks, when I get a bit more time and it warms up a bit, I will check it out. Right now the gasket on the front light is bugging me. Do not know why it is not fitting right. Thanks

Tach not Work on 420 Crawler

I was out yesterday pushing snow with my 1958 420 crawler and my tach started jumping around and finally quit. Before I go troubleshooting it, anybody have a similar experience and know solutions and suggestions for trouble shootings. Thanks in advance.

Re: Key ignition question

It could be a faulty switch. I switched the rear light to work of the same terminal as the headlights. Now everything works, and I do get brights and dims, and the crawler does not die on the last setting (dim). I do not have the red light anyway with the sealed beam in the rear light. What I do not...

Re: Key ignition question

Stan, I will look but if I recall, the light switch does not look like it is meant to be taken apart, at least not easily. Can it be taken apart and cleaned?

Thanks

Re: Key ignition question

Found some time today and installed the new fuse holder and the key ignition switch. Easier than I thought. Started up the crawler and it runs. Key ignition works. Front lights work on L and B position. When I go to the D position with the crawler on, it dies. With crawler off, the front lights work...

Re: Key ignition question

Lavoy, I don't know why I did not think of you regarding the fuse holder. I guess I thought it was a standard item I could get locally. Next time I certainly will think of you....and your good advice and prompt delivery.

Re: Key ignition question

What I do not have is a red rear light. So maybe that is the combination switch not being used. I am more used to a Farmall, and the fuse only protects the lights. So, first time my fuse went out, I was just using the crawler as normal and did not (I do not think) turn on the lights. Took me awhile ...

Re: Key ignition question

Stan and all, The front lights are bulb lights. The rear is now sealed beam. Both lights now work, but I had to run a separate wire to get a good ground on the rear light. This morning I worked until I could get to the back of the combination switch. I then ran a wire directly from the negative anod...

Re: Key ignition question

This evening I took the wire from the combination switch to the front lights and disconnected it at both end. I put a small battery at one end and a ground and then tested the other end with my meter. I am getting juice through the wire. And I did not see any bare spots on the wire where it might be...
