Re: 420-crawler new voltage regulator 6 volts

Hi, Yep. Regardless of voltage, a generator needs to be polarized to match which side of the battery is used for ground. 6, 12 or 24. And there were some 32, 36 and 48 volt as well. Just not on our machines we chat about here. The norm is 6v is positive ground and 12v is negative ground. But the ear...

Re: 420-crawler new voltage regulator 6 volts

Hi, There are mild steel plates associated with the field coils in a generator. What you are doing is making them into a mild permanent magnet. Setting one end North and the other end South. Like the poles on the planet. Hence the term Polarization. That is where the initial magnetic field comes fro...

Re: Snow!!

Hi,

We had our first snow here in NC. 2 1/2 inches. It didn't need plowing with a tractor, much less a crawler.

Re: 40C All fuel running on 75% diesel

Hi, The way distillate combusts is that the lighter fraction will burn first. So the spark ignites and burns all the gas, which makes heat which burns the kero which makes heat to burn the diesel. The lower compression allows for this rather than it all trying to burn at one time, which will knock a...

Re: 40C All fuel running on 75% diesel

Hi, There is a slight difference in the shape of the piston top in an all-fuel v a straight gas. But the main difference is the addition of shutters in front of the radiator to give higher running temps. You get to eyeball the gage to not let it get too cold. These were thermosiphon up till the 420,...

Re: 40C All fuel running on 75% diesel

Hi, All fuel was Distillate. The leftover parts of petroleum distillation. As one boils the crude in a still, the temperature rises in between the fractions then steadies for each one. Gas, Naptha, kerosene, No1 fuel oil, Diesel. What they did was open a valve to each pipe in turn when the temp stea...

Re: Potential 420c Purchase

Hi,

That is my thinking as well. So I would count on all the 6v bits being in trouble by now....

Re: Potential 420c Purchase

Hi, Easy. Hook up meter to battery and read voltage. Should be about 12.5 v. Start machine. Voltage drops from load then rise up to around 13.8 v. If not, then you know it isn't charging. The ignition issue may well be there is no resistor added into the line feeding the coil. That would make the co...

Hi,

There were optional rubber pads back when these machines were new.

Hi,

I use 10w30 in my 2-cylinders. Easier cranking for the 6v systems. Especially in cold weather.
