Re: This global warming thing is down right cold...
The latest theory from the AL Gore types is that melting Arctic ice is screwing up the air currents, causing the cold to be brought south. If you look at their maps of global temperature though, it is ONLY occurring here in the US. We are expected to believe that the entire rest of the world is warm...

Re: New Board Test
I went and looked at it. I will give it a shot if I need to post pics. Good to have all that stuff in one place for exploring.

Re: maximum degree of climbing, assent, descent
The steepest material I have been able to climb with my 420 was a pile of chopped hay. The grousers engage well, but at the same time the stuff tends to stick together and not slip easily. It was greater than 100% grade. I have been there where you are climbing a bank with an excavator and hit a har...

Re: New Board Test
This is excellent. It automatically fits itself to the screen on my phone.
I wonder if the green and yellow colors could be brought back.

Re: 1957 420C - Pressure in fuel tank
Vapor pressure of gasoline is higher than atmospheric pressure unless it's colder than roughly 20 degrees (depends on the formulation of the fuel). Therefore, all that is necessary to build pressure in a gas tank is to seal it up. Older machines required a vented cap, newer machines had a tight cap ...

I have seen the concrete cut diagonally, this might be a good idea to prevent the chipping from grousers. Or drive over them at an angle, but turning dozers will scratch up concrete unless it has a hardened surface. Machines with semigrouser pads (3 short grousers) are pretty much a non issue, they ...

OK, I feel like an ass... Turns out it was ice after all. For some reason the oil looked clean and unfrozen when I looked down the hole the dipstick goes in. But I pulled out the intake pipe to inspect it, and in that hole it was full of milkshake and the pipe was plugged solid with ice. After heati...

On a 420 the intake for the pump is a line up from the tank and past the engine and down to the pump. Both this line and the pressure line back to the valve body are dry. I don't know if it's normal for these to bleed down after sitting. The oil is new last year, and any water is supposed to emulsif...

420 hyd pump won't prime when cold
Over the years I have had an issue where the hydraulics will sometimes not work in cold temps, it has been happening more and more often and now drives me nuts. Last year I replaced the hydraulic oil using ISO 32 (specified by owner's manual) because there were ice crystals in the oil from the accum...

A $5,000 gas crawler is going to be a 420, 430, or 440. I would be sure it has a reverser to make operation easier and make sure the track clutches don't slip and the brakes are good. Do a little research on how to evaluate track wear because undercarriage work is expensive. As said they are not the...

Welcome to the forums, it moves a bit slow here but it does pick up from time to time especially when the ground freezes! I bought a 420 crawler several years ago because I thought it was the neatest thing ever made and I wanted my own bulldozer for whatever. Since then it has been through many adve...

Clutch disk might be stuck to rust. Try pushing against a load and stepping on the pedal to free it up. If it stops when you step on the pedal but still won't go in gear, adjustment is necessary by loosening a nut on the bellhousing to turn the stud, I think clockwise brings the throwout bearing awa...

420 with winch for sale in Upstate NY
This is on the side of Route 7 in Pittstown. I stopped in to see if the owner would sell the winch and log arch, but upon closer inspection it is not a Gearmatic winch or a JD log arch. They seem to be an integral unit but I did not figure out what brand. Winch runs off the PTO shaft via chain drive...
