Hi, And, after the power washing gets it on the road to freedom, go find a ditch with some water in it and run the tracks thru that and they'll really free up. ;) Everyone: Note that part about being careful with the pressure washer, though. There are things you don't want to point that jet at.... ;...

Hi, I hope you don't mind my chuckling over here regarding the manual issue. That's something I'm *always* pointing out around here. You have to have all the service manuals prior to your model from the 'M' up to cover all the bases. I bet you didn't know you became a JD dealer service dept. when yo...

Hi, No, sounds about right. The 'M' series tractors were produced 1947-52 and then the 40 superseded it. IIRC, the 'MC' came out 1949 or 1950, a bit later than the M wheel tractor variant. The MC was 3-roller only, or at least I don't ever recall there being a 4-roller MC. Might have been some right...

Hi, The M series predated the 40 series. Much is the same, but there were some updates along the way. One thing is that the MC was only available with a 3-roller track, while they added the 4-roller option for the 40c series. Then, later on they added the 5-roller option. Some parts used changed eac...

Hi, The older machines, like my 'M' were spec'd to use non-detergent motor oil. One can use up to 30ND in those. But, that's in the summer. In the cooler weather, one has to drain the 30 wt out and replace it with 20 or 10 wt. If you leave the 30 wt in and the temp drops below 40 deg F, then the lif...

Hi, Just FYI, if you want to go looking around Craigslist..... There was a guy just outside of Roxboro that had that 67 JD350 crawler/loader/backhoe that I went with my neighbor to see a couple months ago. It was decent enough but needed a new bucket bottom put onto the Drott 4:1 bucket. He had it o...

Hi, Tracks roll better than wheels when the transmission is in neutral. If it's not moving, then I suspect that your track chain pins are rusted to the bushings. If so, then you're not only not going to roll it, you're going to have one fun (not) time getting the tracks off the machine. Those pins h...

Gettin' It Stuck = comedy show!
Hi, Well, we *finally* are getting some wet stuff falling out of the sky around here in NC. It's been so long, I forgot what that's called..... Anyway, being inside for once in a couple of months, I was eyeballing what happened to be on daytime TV. I tripped across the show on Discovery where they b...

Hi, Yes, it can be confusing, all right. My neighbor was in the market for a loader/backhoe. He found a JD350 so equipped not too far away, so I went along to look it over. It was advertised as a 1989 JD350C. It wasn't. It was a 1967 JD350, which would not have had a sub-letter. What we call a 'stra...

Hi, I think they used the 'c' after the model number, then the series letter, as the 'c' was used years earlier to denote anything that was a crawler. Not that they needed to, as there were no wheel tractors using the same model number as any crawler once they came out with the 350 and 450. Prior to...

Hi, The direction reverser is designed to spin the input shaft of the transmission in the opposite direction when the reverser lever is in the reverse position. This allows all forward gears to be used to back the machine up at whatever speed you were going forward. It's a very handy tool. To do thi...

Hi, Ok. I'll stick my foot in it now and offer a chance to come over and see what it's all about. You're in Durham and I'm in Kipling (just North of Lillington) and have a 420c Dozer that will do for a 3-dimensional drawing of a crawler dozer. You can even get on and take a little drive. :) PM if in...

Hi, The only thing you *might* gain from flipping the whole chain is if you have less wear on the 'reverse' side of the outside of the bushing. This is unlikely, though, because crawlers spend almost as much time backing up as they do going forward so the outside surface of the bushing winds up worn...
