40c Steering Clutches

Overhauled the left steering clutches several years ago and not much usage since. It sat outside for a couple of years and the steering clutches obviously got some water in them and stuck. I took it apart and things looked pretty good. Rust was only at the bottom of the clutch assembly. Took it all ...

Re: MC Axle Problem

Don't know if I can help. All I have worked on is a 40c 4 roller. However, I do have a parts book for an MC. Looking at the diagram of the final drive, I see that there is a spacer (M210T) located on the axle inboard, or in the center, of the outer bearing. Is this spacer missing, worn or damaged? D...

No, I used Grade 5. Others can chime in if I am wrong but I think the theory is that it is better for the fasteners to wear than the shoes.

Not sure about your machine, but my old 40c does not take plow bolts which are a different profile altogether from a regular bolt. If in doubt, ask Lavoy what he recommends.

I've always used Fastenall. My opinion is regular bolts and lock nuts. Others may disagree.

Re: Deere 820-2010 Loader Backhoe final drive removal. Lots - O -Rust!

Thanks Lavoy. I think it was only about 10 years ago that I installed this track so the pin shouldn't come out too hard. The only reason I am taking it apart is that the final drive will not release so the clutches probably need some work. Might be in touch with you about these. I did hit the pin us...

Re: Deere 820-2010 Loader Backhoe final drive removal. Lots - O -Rust!

You are right Lavoy, it is 1" and the chain had to be shortened. so back to my original questions, what is the best way to remove the pin and can I drive it right on through?

Thanks Lavoy, but when I replaced the track with a better used one, the guy supplied a drive-in pin which I used.

Re: Deere 820-2010 Loader Backhoe final drive removal. Lots - O -Rust!

Does anyone know if these "drive-in" pins can go either way. I started getting ready to take my 40c apart today and can't remember which way I drove the pin in, probably from the outside as that would be easiest. Can I just drive it on through or do I have to drive it back out the way it went in?

Re: Deere 820-2010 Loader Backhoe final drive removal. Lots - O -Rust!

It seemed to me that it was interference fit all the way but it was a few years ago that I put that track on. Lavoy could probably tell you. As I remember, I just drove it in with a mall. Got to take it out again soon as I have to work on the steering clutches. We will see how that goes.

Re: Deere 820-2010 Loader Backhoe final drive removal. Lots - O -Rust!

I checked the master pin on my 40c today and it actually has a small "divot" in each end so if that is what you have, you should be able to spot it from either side.

Re: Deere 820-2010 Loader Backhoe final drive removal. Lots - O -Rust!

If you don't see a clip, it may have a "drive-in" pin. I used one of these on my 40c. Take a good look and you might see a small indent in one end of the pin which will identify it as the master.
