...I HATE pulling final drives, it sucks... Lavoy Yup, yup, yup, yup, yup - Since none of y'all can see me sitting here vigourously shaking my head up and down! :P I have a special gauge and set of wrenches dad made in the machine shop back when we had the Deere dealership because *he* hated pullin...

Hi, Yup. Lever on the right side of the dash indicates the gear-type. You have to use the master clutch with both types, BTW. It's easier to shift the differential style since you're not meshing gears and it never gets hung up on the teeth. If you don't use the master clutch *and* come to a complete...

Hi, Well, there were two reverser types used on the 420. The early one was a gear-type and the lever was on the right side of the dash. I can't tell if this style is on your machine, since the loader frame is in the way. I *think* the gear-type was only used with the 4-speed transmission. The later ...

Hi, FWIW, I figured out a long time ago that I need two machines. Mind you,. I have more than two, but I only really need two. Oh, and don't worry about my wife - she already knows that I happen to have more stuff than I *need*! So does she, so we're even!! :P Anyway, one is a crawler/dozer and the ...

Hi, Yeah, I saw that one a week or so ago, and posted an 'anyone ever seen this one before?'... I guess he didn't sell it. I think it's cute, but how in heck would I yank the thing home? My trailer bed is only 6 foot wide. I suspect I'm not the onlty one who's looked at his auction and asked himself...

Hi, Actually, having a set of known-good parts and playing the old swap game is usually the quickest way to T-shoot these things. It may not reveal everything that is going on, but it usually gets you close enough to not matter. FWIW, being an electrical engineer, I have an old dwell meter / tachome...

Anyone ever see one of these before?
Hi,
Well, this is a new one for me. I never saw one *that* wide with rails *that* narrow before. What is it for?

Hi, You should be going straight from the coil to the plug, not thru the dist. cap. After re-reading my post, I don't think I made that clear enough. By so doing, you cut out possible cap and/or alignment (as in timing positioning) issues with the dist. You can also unhook the coil from the original...

Hi, I guess I'll put in my 2 cents as well. Keep in mind that you can easily have a breakdown of the internal insulation in the coil windings. This would allow it to pass low voltage resistance checks (it's rare to find a ohmmeter that puts out more than 9 volts) yet not produce a spark from the sec...

Hi, The Bull Gear is that large diameter one that the sprocket drive axle is attached to. It's the one you can easily inspect if you pull off the cover on the bottom of the final drive housing (where you'd drain the final drive gear lube from). This is the main reduction gear in the system, and ther...

Hi, Yeah, I saw that one, too. At first, I thought 'no, it's a 1010'. Then as I looked closer at the pix, I noticed that many things looked very odd - not least of which was what looked like a flat cyl head. Heck, that's a 440 all right, but one in terrible shape and with the wrong engine in it to b...

Hi, Yeah, it's like that around here as well. Near the popular areas, rules out the ying-yang. Heck, I bet in Cary, NC you couldn't even have a crawler on your place because it'd put marks in the grass or something like that. Cary is 'one of those places'. Out where I am, it's like it is at Lavoy's ...

Hi, Now, *there's* an interesting math problem! How much digging space (in feet and inches) would each crawler have if there were 400 crawlers on 48 acres? :p Man, what a sight that'd be - 400 crawlers all in one place. It'd look like the back lot at the factory, I expect! :) I guess someone in Kans...

Hi, That sounds like a good plan - riding around and taking pix of crawlers being used for farming. I haven't seen a crawler doing ag work in a long, long time. All I've seen is the usual dozer and loader applications. It'd make for a interesting addition to the site. :) I did use my 420c for a quic...
