It sounds like an H-L-R transmission problem. I often solve this after realizing that the transmission oil level is low, and topping it off. Let's hope that's all it is, otherwise is sounds like you're in for a lot of work.

Unit wouldn't drive. After removing clutches, found the vertical throw out bearing actuator shaft stuck, particularly at the lower bushing. I feel I should lubricate this during reassembly - thinking about a) coating it liberally with grease, b) drilling, and adding a grease hose to externally mount...
