New tube prices
We were just looking at getting a new barrel made for one of our hoe boom cylinders. It is a 4" cylinder and were quoted a price of $150/foot for the material. That was cost with no mark up and no machining and welding. Very supprised at how expenseive the material is. Hard to find a good 9550 hoe f...

Good starting compared to others
Just a few tips on starting in cold weather. 1. Make sure you have two batteries installed, makes a huge difference. 2. Run some winter fuel in it if available. 3. Install a block heater. 4. Make sure you step the cluch petal all the way to the floor, this activates the dry cluch. 5. Don't be afraid...

The lengths that we go to.
In 2006, i bought a nice original lindeman crawler with dozer in East Wenatchee Washington. My dad and I left Wildwood, Alberta (1 hour west of Edmonton) very early in the moring and ended up a few hours past Spokane that night. In the morning we completed our trek and made it back to Wildwood at ab...

Rear Entry
We didn't go that route as our 350C's are widepads, then you have to mess with outside bearings, axles, etc. We really get at it and we started at 7AM and by noon we had pulled the motor, loader assembly and reverser. Fairy fast with two guys, althought it took a better part of a day to reassemble.

Coupler
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the coupler between the tranny and reverser. Lots of labour to fix as you need to pull the engine and reverser to get at it.
Just a thought..

Use Reverse If You have It
The 350C dozer machines that i have owned all had reverse in the transmission, so you put the tranny in reverse and the reverser in forward. This was needed when running a winch, which will only operate with the reverser in forward, so that you can back up and winch in at the same time. We installed...

Sprokets
I would remove the sprokets as well, in fact i think you need to as the final drive has dowels and must come out straight. I would recommend using a shop crane. We attached a braket that we attach to the outer bearing cover (just angle iron with two holes drilled and a hook or loop for lifting). You...

Hydraulic Winches
We have a hydraulic winch that was mounted on a 450C and bolts right up in the factory mounting. The previous owner rigged it up because he needed power out and power in for raising and lower flare stacks. My only concern in using it would be the lack of freespool. The deere winch works nice, and ye...

Best to do so
We find it is best to remove the side boxes (hydraulic or battery) and the fuel tank. Much faster. If you are a glutton for punishment or have a helper you can remove and install without a crane. Make sure to drain you fuel first before attempting to remove by hand. We weld a small ubolt or clevis o...

3179 is a great engine
We put a 3179 in our 350C widepad hoe and wow what a difference. We bought a farily new ingersoll rand compressor for this engine. It will start at 15 below (celcius that is) without ether. Have to be careful and run this machine a low revs as we are scared to blow up the drive train as it is alot m...

Fluids at your local walmart
We use regular hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic system with the weight corresponding to weather, THG (Transmission, Hydraulic, Gear) in the transmission, THG or ATF in the reverser and gear oil in the final drives. I don't think i have every seen a pail of John Deere oil on the premises. My dad has ...

Other Options
Another option instead of welding, which may not hold well, is having a tighener made up at a local machine shop. Our local machinest makes them for our 350. The tighener mechanisim is really simple, i think we pay about $400 for a complete ready to bolt on assembly. If you are not concerned about k...

I would bet the possibilty of returning to running his business keeps him going, these olds need someting to look forward to. Clutch in a 350
I just happen to have 2 350 dozers in the shed that do in fact have dry cluches, meaning that they do not have reversers. My dad thought they were odd so we kept them instead of wrecking or selling them. Just thought i would let you know that there are some other non-reverser machines out there.
