Re: 420 6 volt starter
It's been a while, but I never removed the gas tank to pull the starter. I may have had to remove the starter switch to gain some clearance. Good luck.

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch - includes pictures
Never took my blocks off. I've winched some very big butt logs without any indications that these mounts were being strained; the paint has no cracks showing. My winch has pulled the machine backwards multiple times with the brakes locked and the blade down.

Re: 420c throwout bearing
I'll second Ray's comments. Make sure that you free up all the internal parts. Things adjust up pretty well if you do, or will be a pain if overlooked. I replaced bushings, some springs and woodruff keys as well. Wish I had paid more attention to the brake pedal linkages when everything was exposed....

Ray: I've bought better grade hardware by "Googling" my needs. The interweb can be a wonderful tool; just not when discussing politics.

Re: 1010 Crawler Foot Brake
If you have the tracks split already, It's not that hard to pull the finals. I used a painter's scaffold on wheels, a sheet of plywood to roll on, and a chain hoist to do mine ( I've also used a pole tripod lashed together with a hoist to manhandle things like this in the past). A manual will be ver...

Hi: I tore into my 420s finals a few years ago, and posted here. Click on the pictures, and I think that you'll be routed to my photobucket account, and the pictures will be clear. Hope you find this thread helpful when you get into your finals. Paul http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/viewtopic....

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch - includes pictures
Tom: I haven't been using my dozer much this year. I now have a Case 95xt skid steer, and it gets things done quicker. My winch has an issue with the controller that I need to dig into deeper when it warms up; brake cylinder doesn't activate properly, so It doesn't release or activate correctly. The...

Re: Snowplowing
Good advice already given. My two cents is to be sure to dig out your tracks nightly so the center idler doesn't freeze up if you have one. Ice and frozen dirt turns to concrete that binds to front idlers and sprockets, and adjustor springs. I park on planks too. Have fun.

Hi: Glad some of my adventures are of help to others. I found that if I clicked on a picture, I could link to my photobucket account and get a clear picture to view. Merry Christmas, and Happy Wrenching.

Re: Implements for 420C
There are some YouTube videos of crawlers pulling plows. Some show them on firm ground with the plows offset, and others show them with a track in a furrow. I'd think that having the crawler on firm, reasonably level footing would be preferable so that the track wear would be reduced,

Re: JD 420C Track Project
Nice to see this thread still running. I bought a rubber tired skid steer so that I could run back and forth to my daughters property a half mile away by road and do earth works, etc. Tracks like this would mean I could do the same with my 420. If I want to move the dozer, it costs me $40/move. I do...

Re: 1010 steering clutch frozen vs adjustment
Jim and dtoots have given you good info. Like the manual says, a speed wrench is handy for adjusting the throw out bearing. I taped my socket to the wrench so it didn't separate and end up part of the final drive mechanism. If your adjustment efforts aren't satisfactory, It really isn't that hard to...

Re: Gearmatic 8A winch manuals
I'm willing to send a .pdf copy of the Gearmatic 8a/g winch manual to anyone who sends me an email and asks. For free. I was in touch with Paccar years ago and asked about copyright infringement. The person I spoke with then said that they didn't care that I shared. Paul

Hi: A few years ago I rebuilt my 420's final drives with the help of this board. I've included a link to that project; it includes pictures and discussions that you may find helpful. Best regards. Paul
