Not going to buy it, just interested in looking at how the hoe is attached. I agree that it looks suspicious, which was why I asked what others thought. I already have one 440 which I had to rebuild. No need for another one....YET

440 w/ Backhoe on eBay

Ok, there is a 440 on ebay with what looks like a 51 backhoe (just guessing). Can anyone tell if this is a factory installed hoe? I do not see any extra reinforcement in the fenders which is required for the backhoe. Here is the link. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-John-Deere-440-Trac-Loader-Backhoe-Ru...

Been where you are, not fun, but you can win the battle one way or the other. I doubt you can get enough heat on the final to do much. That is a lot of metal to heat up. If you want to try heat, heat the bolts and then let them cool down. This did not work for me but it is worth giving it a try. May...

If you are talking about the 4 large bolts that go from the cross bar bracket to the final drives, they can be very difficult to remove. When I did my machine, I could not get two of them out, and I tried everything!! First get a very good impact gun (3/4" or 1") and see if that works. If not, try a...

My opinion is to get this crawler into an area where you can work on it correctly. The fact that your steering levels are frozen likely means you will have to go into the finals and replace the steering clutches (sorry about the bad news). Once they rust, they usually have to be replaced. So, get it...

If you happen to have a good old fashion hardware store around, you may get lucky and find one. I found two at an old hardware store, probably were hanging there for thirty years based on the amount of dust on them (price was not pretty good too).

If not, I believe Lavoy has them.

On the blower assembly, there is a small plug which can be removed and you can squirt a SMALL amount of ether into the blower. That should get it to start in the cold weather. Without the ether, you are just wearing down the battery and starter trying to get it to start. It should start quickly with...

If it were me, I would replace them. But if there is just surface rust on the metal disks, I would try Evapo-Rust to clean the disks. No wire brush or abrasives required. Simply take the metal disks and soak them in the aqueous based Evapo-Rust for about 30-60 minutes. It will remove only iron oxide...

My JD manual for the diesel version states approximately 6300 pounds. If you happen to have an 831 loader on it, here are what the loader options weigh (from JD manual) Loader (no bucket, no weights, no scarifier) = 2402 Loader (with bucket but no weights, no scarifier) = 3048 Loader (with bucket, 4...

I have an extra air cleaner and clamp (MINUS the oil cups) available if anyone is interested. I can send you pics. This is for a 440 diesel. Send PM and we can discuss.

Kip: Make sure the finals are the same for both machines. There are several final drives for a 440 and they do not all have the same gears ratios. Lavoy is the expert and would know the details on gear ratios, etc. If both machines have the same finals, then they can interchanged between machines, a...

If the engine is not cranking fast and the cables are heating up, my guess is a poor connection or weak battery. Check all cable connections to make sure they are tight and clean. Also, if this is a diesel, make sure you have heavy cables (1/0 or 2/0) from the battery to the starter and ground. I tr...

Once I installed the new regulator, I simply started the engine and jumped across the BAT and GEN terminals. The shop I bought the new regulator from said to expect a large spark, which was exact...
