Never done it with a crawler as big as the 2010 but the pipe and board method works on the 40/420 crawlers. But sometimes the pipe will sink if you don't have a lot of them to distribute the weight and you are not on hard ground or concrete. You can literally push it by hand on the trailer so make s...

I'm in the camp of - I don't want to do it again.

I'd replace all of the items Lavoy mentions plus the bearings for the axle and pinion shaft and the axle seals.

If it's starving for fuel, as it sounds like it is from your description, check this. If it's original, there's a screen in the elbow fitting on the carb. Make sure that isn't clogged up as well as the sediment bowl under the tank.

That is way too much charge voltage. Somethings not right there.

Unique looking machine with that homemade sheetmetal. I've not ever had much luck unsticking clutches. Usually have to rebuild them.

Very nice, thanks for posting the pictures.

As I understand it - Yes you're SOL. That is why they want the dealer or sales rep to place the tag on the unit. So they can verify that you have what their records indicate that block belongs to. I think there are some legal reasons. Theif identity, etc that also come into play here as well. So the...

I hear, you can get the block number off the engine, go to your friendly local John Deere dealer and they will send it off to Mother Deere who will look it up and create you a new serial number plate. It will have bar code symbols on it, which I think looks terrible but, you'll get the serial number...

Check the ground cable where it bolts to the dash and the bottom of the dash where it bolts to the trans. That's your ground path. Rust in both these spots has caused me problems before.

Nice crawler. I have a 40C also with the 61 blade. Yours has also been modified to have a second cylinder on the left side. Mine has the same modification and I have seen others.

Are you planning to do any restoration on it?

Distance from the shop is in directed proportion to the severity of the breakdown. It is very important to keep all the UC fasteners tight. Frame clamps especially but anything joining rollers, idlers and sprockets too. If it get motion in it that it wasn't designed to have, things break. Good luck!

Welcome to the club. I have 2 40C's. Those frame clamps are relatively cheap. About $30 for a pair.

Wade, Some spotting features to look for on the 420. If it has a oil fill hole on top of the hood and below and to the front of the distributor, it a late (58). Gated shifter should be a 57 or 58. Ungated - 56. and the plate location (or where it should be) that chickenman mentioned. If it's a 5 sp ...
