Hi, Keep in mind that the 350 and 450 series were designed to be an industrial crawler from the get-go. They are not derived from ag tractors like all the crawlers that preceded them. So, that means no PTO was incorporated into their designs. The number of crawler users that actually used a PTO when...

Hi, Yes, Corn Head grease works well. I'm still using stuff in a 5 gallon pail from back in the late 1940's / early 1950's which was meant for such service at the time these things were new. Unfortunately, I have not found a suitable alternative at any of the area lubrication shops. You know, places...

Hi, I have ice caulks on my 420c, or half a set of them anyway. Those were pad bolts with long conical heads made from tool steel they sold specifically for use on ice. Dad got half of a set way back when, so both sets of tracks sport one ice caulk for each pad. Half a loaf was better than none. The...

Hi, Basically, no. The ROPS was a late 1960's idea and so didn't show up on the 440 at all. The earliest JD crawlers to get one was the 350 and 450 lines. There was a push in the early 1970's to make available ROPS for older tractors, but those offerings were pretty much unavailable by 1980. I don't...

Hi,

I don't know if the 2010 uses the same type of idler(and so the same type of grease) as the 420. On the 420 I use the same lubricant as for the upper idlers and the bottom rollers.

That'd be corn head grease these days. Only source I find it at is the Deere dealer.

Hi, I've had the issue, several times, where there is gas in the bowl and then it sits and the gas evaporates, and then the float winds up stuck 'low'. The symptom is that when you turn the gas on, shortly thereafter gas winds up coming out the air intake. As noted, a light tap with a small hammer o...

Hi,

Yep. Water *is* the universal solvent!

You ought to see how well it works to make a rust-sticky crawler track chain free up! ;)

Helps to find or make a shallow ditch with water in it to run the track in, but one can do it with a hose.

Hi, HyGard is Deere's newer fluid and spec'd to be used anywhere 303 previously had been spec'd. As others have noted, I also do not use off-brand hyd oil that lists 303 along with a bunch of other spec's, I just buy Deere's HyGard. It's not like I go thru a lot of it, so the cost isn't really a fac...

Hi,

Actually, that might be an option. At least I know it won't sit and sit at your place. Heck, you'd probably use it right along with that trencher! :P

Hi, I don't know as this is so unthinkable. I'd consider trading my 420c for a 350 if I could find one to trade for that was still in decent condition. The older iron is becoming too old to do any really serious work, and I always worry about busting something that is too 'deere' to think about bust...

Hi, As far as the PTO parts go, I suspect you can still find some. Lavoy might even have what you need, so wait for him to chime in here. As far as the power for a 5-ft Hog, yes it will do that. I use my 420c without 3-pt with a 5-ft Hog that is rigged as a trailing unit (hooks to drawbar). Later! S...

Hi, If you have shift forks visible through the barrel plugs, then it must be a reverser, not a housing with a straight shaft in it. If the reverser is in forward, then your transmission forward gears will move the machine forward and the transmission reverse gear will move the machine in reverse. I...

Hi,

Stepped *up* 18 inches to get off the *top* of the tank deck??

So, that means the gun barrel could lay flat on the ground.

Now, *that* is what I call **stuck** but good!!

And, I thought I've seen some stuck stuff in the past......

The sulfate coating on the plates greatly inhibits the ability to produce large amounts of current for any length of ...
